It was a special day on our maternity ward at Rockingham General Hospital yesterday as parents Jordyn and Connor welcomed two beautiful twin girls into the world, Matilda and Melody.

Adding to the occasion, two of the three midwives supporting the birth were also there for the arrival of Jordyn’s first baby in 2021, and the twins were born on midwife Beth's birthday!

The family also shares a remarkable connection with the hospital, with seven members of their extended family having welcomed babies in the same birth suite.

Congratulations to Jordyn and Connor on the safe arrival of Matilda and Melody 🎀

As we mark Virtual Care Awareness Week (26–30 October), we're highlighting how virtual care is helping patients access healthcare in a way that is convenient, safe and flexible.

Virtual appointments are simpler than you might expect, and you don't need to be tech-savvy to get started. If you have access to a suitable phone, tablet or computer, you may be able to attend your appointment remotely.

Laughter really is the best medicine 😄

A WA-first therapeutic program is bringing moments of joy, connection and companionship to older patients at Fremantle Hospital.

Laughter Care, a nationally recognised program delivered by Clown Doctors Australia involves specially-trained performers interacting with patients to help improve wellbeing, reduce emotional distress and brighten their day.

Thanks to funding from South Metropolitan Health Service and The Hospital Research Foundation Group, the program is giving more older patients the opportunity to experience the benefits of laughter and human interaction.

For long term hospital patients like 78-year-old Ken, there was an instant connection with performer “Audrey” who he was able to share his passions for singing, music and acting.

Following a successful pilot, the program has now been expanded following its positive impact on patients, families and staff.

Mental Health Month is a time to recognise the importance of mental wellbeing, both in our communities and across our workplaces. 💜

Across SMHS, our people make a difference every day, supporting consumers, carers, families and colleagues through some of life's most challenging moments.

This year, we've celebrated a significant milestone with the Mental Health Crisis Centre at Fremantle Hospital moving to 24/7 operations, providing people experiencing mental health distress with timely support in a safe, therapeutic environment. We've also continued work to strengthen community mental health services, with staff helping shape the future of care through consultation and engagement activities.

Just as importantly, we're committed to supporting the wellbeing of our own workforce. Through initiatives such as psychological first aid, wellbeing-focused reflective sessions, counselling services, and our new SMHS Staff Wellbeing Framework 2026-29, we're working to create workplaces where people feel supported, connected and safe to speak up.

This Mental Health Month, we thank our mental health workforce and every staff member who contributes to the wellbeing of others. Together, we're building stronger services, healthier workplaces and better outcomes for our community.

New tool offering Aboriginal women culturally safe maternity care 🤰

The Fiona Stanley Hospital (FSH) maternity team has just launched Baby Coming You Ready (BCYR) in partnership with the Ngangk Yira Institute for Change at Murdoch University.

Designed by Aboriginal community and professionals, BCYR aims to overcome communication barriers between Aboriginal women and their health care provider during pregnancy, building trust and relationships.

The digital platform provides wrap-around solutions to the many barriers impacting trusting engagement, effective assessment, routine screens and effective woman-centred care.

We look forward to offering BCYR to our Aboriginal women as we support them, their babies and their families accessing maternity care at FSH.

It was great to welcome Magenta Marshall MLA to Rockingham General Hospital to mark construction getting underway on the new Mental Health Emergency Centre and Behavioural Assessment Unit.

The project will deliver an eight-bed Mental Health Emergency Centre and a two-bed Behavioural Assessment Unit, providing dedicated facilities to support people experiencing acute mental health concerns.

Once complete, the purpose-built facility will strengthen access to specialised mental health care for our local community, closer to home.

Fiona Stanley Hospital (FSH) has become the first Australian public hospital to successfully perform four robotic-assisted radical prostatectomies (RARP) in a single operating list 🙌

The minimally invasive keyhole surgery uses the da Vinci robotic system to treat prostate cancer, enabling patients to recover faster whilst improving surgical capacity.

Routinely performing up to three RARP procedures per list, achieving four in a single day demonstrates the growing capability of FSH's robotic surgery program.

As the first WA public hospital to offer the da Vinci robotic surgical system in 2018, FSH has since delivered over 1,800 robotic procedures across Urology, Upper GI, Cardiothoracic Surgery and Gynaecology.

🚴 Meet team ‘Two Tyred’!

Fiona Stanley Hospital’s Human Resources Management Services team are swapping desks for bikes on Sunday 1 November, taking on the Capital Limited Breaths & Beats Ride.

The team will tackle the scenic 34 km ride to support vital heart and lung research in WA, and they’re encouraging others to get behind the cause by riding, donating, volunteering or cheering from the sidelines.

50 years of care. One unforgettable night. ✨

Over the weekend, past and present staff and volunteers from Rockingham General Hospital (RGH) celebrated a special milestone at the hospital’s 50th Anniversary Ball.

More than 250 people dressed up, caught up with old colleagues, shared memories and packed the dance floor. It was a chance to reflect on how far RGH has come and recognise the people who have helped shape it over the past five decades.

Over the years, we've seen enormous changes in healthcare, technology, uniforms, services, and the size of our hospital and community. But one thing has remained the same: RGH is a special place to work because of the people in it.

We thank everyone who has been part of the journey – including some who have been with us since the hospital first opened its doors!

We spend a lot of our lives at work caring for others, so it was wonderful to take a moment to celebrate and enjoy the company of the people we work alongside.

Happy 50th birthday, RGH! 💜

Every child deserves the chance to live life to the fullest 💜

Today, three-year-old Matilda is a happy, healthy little girl. But when she was just seven months old, she became critically unwell after a severe anaphylactic reaction to peanuts.

That frightening experience led Matilda and her family to Fiona Stanley Hospital's Oral Immunotherapy Trial, a Telethon-funded research project exploring how early intervention may help reverse peanut allergy in infants.

Now in its third year, the study has received almost $777,000 in Telethon funding since 2023, helping researchers deliver this groundbreaking work and create brighter futures for children like Matilda.

As Telethon returns this weekend, we're celebrating the incredible generosity of the WA community and the life-changing difference it makes for children living with illness, disability and disadvantage.
