We're back with another instalment of movie and TV tie-ins available at the Merredin Library!

We’ve got Margaret Atwood’s gripping original novel, 𝑻𝒉𝒆 π‘―π’‚π’π’…π’Žπ’‚π’Šπ’…β€™π’” 𝑻𝒂𝒍𝒆, along with its compelling sequel, 𝑻𝒉𝒆 π‘»π’†π’”π’•π’‚π’Žπ’†π’π’•π’”. If you love travel memoirs, Bill Bryson’s π‘«π’π’˜π’ 𝑼𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒓 (also published as A Sunburned Country / Walkabout) captures Australia through his uniquely hilarious lens.

You’ll also find 𝑻𝒉𝒆 π‘³π’Šπ’ˆπ’‰π’• π‘©π’†π’•π’˜π’†π’†π’ 𝑢𝒄𝒆𝒂𝒏𝒔, a captivating story about a lighthouse keeper, his wife, and a mysterious baby found adrift at sea, as well as the story of Alan Turing, offering a fascinating look into the brilliant British mathematician, codebreaker, and computer science pioneer.

If you’ve watched the screen adaptations, now is the time to dive into the books and discover everything you missed!

Australia’s national broadcaster Radio National counted down the Top 100 Australian books as voted by Australians.

Any book β€” fiction, non-fiction β€” written by an Australian or resident of Australia was eligible and the results proved to be a mix of novels (new and classic), cookbooks (!) and children’s lit.

Stay tuned in November to see which of the hundred top books we have in the Merredin Library. Here is a hint – it is more than 20.

Taste in drinks seems to come full circle! We’ve gone from traditional, natural flavours to ultra-sweet artificial ones, and now right back to natural ingredients again.

Who remembers drinking these local favourites?

Back in 1929, Mr A. Hobbs established an aerated water factory right here on Mitchell Street. Running Alongside the town Ice Works, the plant was capable of producing an impressive 35 dozen bottles of cordial every hour!

What was your go-to cordial flavour growing up?

Do you know this building and where it used to stand?

If you (or your grandparents!) were born in Merredin during the early 1900s, this might be where your story began. From 1917 to around 1922, this site was home to Nurse Edmondson’s Private Hospital, a local maternity ward.

Do you have a family connection to this spot? Let us know in the comments!

Our September and October photographic display celebrates the Spring season, featuring stunning highlights of our local flora and fauna, including Merredin’s breathtaking wildflowers. Dive into history with archival newspaper articles from Septembers and Octobers past to see how our region has transformed over the years.

Plus, join us in honouring Sir David Attenborough’s 100th birthday with a special tribute alongside a curated selection of our favourite natural history books and DVDs.

What’s your favourite thing about Spring?

Can you guess what these are, or where you might have come across them?

For many, these bring back fond memories of Friday and Saturday nights spent in front of the big screen. Gen Xers might even remember testing just how many teenagers could squeeze into the boot of a car to save a few dollars on tickets!

The old Merredin Drive-In opened at the southeast corner of O’Connor Street in 1960, before eventually closing its doors in March 1992. Who remembers the prominent local businessman who first operated it?

Drop your favorite drive-in memories in the comments below!
