Our aim is to provide and promote equitable opportunity for meeting the informational needs of the people of the City of Kalamunda in a friendly and helpful environment. OUR STORY
The City of Kalamunda Library Service has provided more than 62 years of continuous library service. It has been a vital part of the community since it began in 1958, and its history illustrates how it has responded to the needs of local people. On 3 October 1958 the district's first public library opened in a small transportable building at Recreation Reserve (now Kostera Oval). This consisted of two timber and fibro huts which were purchased from Allawah Grove a former migrant hostel in Guildford, to be used as temporary premises for a library.

𝑾𝒆𝒅𝒏𝒆𝒔𝒅𝒂𝒚 𝑾𝒐𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒓𝒔 - 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗗𝗮𝘆: 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗠𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹

Canning Mills School opened in 1891, to serve the families working for the Canning Jarrah Timber Company who were producing railway sleepers for the goldfields during the gold boom of the 1890s. During the mill’s years of operation, a small community with various services sprung up around it, but most of this disappeared when the mill ceased operation in 1905. The school and the inn, however, continued to operate, with the school moving into a disused church building.

This building was one single room with tall narrow “gothic” windows, heated by a pot belly stove. It had no definite playground, so the children played anywhere in the nearby vicinity – but it was hard to find a level patch as the land sloped down to the railway line and the creek. During the time the mill was in operation the school had up to 50 children of mixed ages at a time, but by the 1920s this had dropped to just 22. In 1930 the school closed due to falling numbers.

This photo of Canning Mills School was taken during the period when Miss Annie O’Flaherty was the teacher, from 1914-1918.

☕💙 𝐑𝐚𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐅𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐬, 𝐑𝐚𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬, 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲

Our 𝐂𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐚 𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐃𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚 fundraiser on 23 October welcomed 55 community members, including our Mayor, Margaret Thomas, and CEO Anthony Vuleta, for a morning of community connection and support for those living with dementia and their families.

Guests enjoyed a delicious morning tea, shared experiences, and took part in dementia-friendly activities while raising funds and awareness for Dementia Australia.

A big thank you to everyone who attended, and to our amazing Kalamunda Library staff whose teamwork and dedication helped make the event such a success.

Together, we are building a more connected, inclusive and dementia-friendly community. 💙
