City of Harare Chess Players shine at Bulawayo Corporate Chess Tournament

By Staff Reporter

Harare City Chess Club member, Engineer Mercy Chigwada, was named Best Player among ladies at the inaugural Bulawayo Corporate Chess Tournament held in Bulawayo on Saturday.

She walked away with a shield and a prize, marking a standout performance in a competitive field.

Eng Chigwada rose to prominence in the late 1990s as part of the highly successful chess team at Ngezi High School in Kadoma District, Mashonaland West.

In a nostalgic twist, Engineer Mercy Chigwada's former mentor, Samuel Mwale—who coached the Ngezi High School team during its dominant years and is now with the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe—was also in attendance as a participant.

Speaking after the tournament, he praised Eng Chigwada’s achievement, describing her as an intelligent and composed player whose abilities extend beyond the chessboard.

He further highlighted her diverse accomplishments, noting her past participation in the Miss Zimbabwe pageant representing Mashonaland West, a rare blend of grace and intellectual prowess.

Another Harare City Chess Club member, Dr Collen Tongowona, scooped the Third Runner Up prize after winning 5 out of 7 games in the tournament.

The Bulawayo Chess Association, in collaboration with the Harare Chess Society, successfully hosted the tournament.

The prestigious event, brought together corporate professionals in a unique fusion of intellect, strategy and competition.

The tournament was conducted as an individual championship, played over seven Swiss rounds in accordance with the latest International Chess Federation (FIDE) laws of chess.

Competitors battled across a fast-paced format, with each round testing both tactical sharpness and endurance.

More than 30 players representing five corporates namely: Centre for Disease Control, ZB Bank, City of Harare, CBZ Bank and the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe participated in the landmark event, reflecting growing corporate interest in chess as both a recreational and cognitive discipline.

Harare City Council Moves to Fill Key Executive Vacancies

By Sani Mbofana

The City of Harare has stepped up efforts to fill top vacant executive positions as part of its drive to strengthen leadership and improve service delivery.

Speaking while giving his report to the Ordinary Council Meeting currently underway, His Worship the Mayor Cllr Jacob Mafume revealed that interviews for the Human Capital Director and Urban Planning Director have already been conducted.

The Mayor further disclosed that plans are underway to fill the critical positions of Town Clerk and Finance Director, posts that have remained vacant for an extended period.

Council recently filled the Chamber Secretary position, a role akin to the Attorney General of Council, with the appointment of Advocate Warren Chiwawa.

In a related development, Council has been advised to consider elevating the position of IT Head to that of Director. On the matter, Mafume said: “Council is advised to raise the position of IT head to that of a director”.

The proposed elevation of the IT function is significant. Municipal operations now rely heavily on digital systems for billing, revenue collection, urban planning, and service delivery tracking.

Making IT a director-level portfolio ensures technology sits at the executive decision-making table, allowing for faster adoption of e-governance solutions, better data security, and improved integration across departments. It also signals Council’s intent to modernize operations and leverage tech to address long-standing service challenges in Harare.

For a long time, the City of Harare operated without substantive heads in key departments due to protracted labour disputes with several former executives.

With most of those cases now resolved, the local authority is pushing to complete its executive structure, a move expected to stabilise administration and sharpen its focus on service delivery.
