City of Harare Chess Players shine at Bulawayo Corporate Chess Tournament

Harare City Chess Club member, Engineer Mercy Chigwada, was named Best Player among ladies at the inaugural Bulawayo Corporate Chess Tournament held in Bulawayo on Saturday.
She walked away with a shield and a prize, marking a standout performance in a competitive field.
Eng Chigwada rose to prominence in the late 1990s as part of the highly successful chess team at Ngezi High School in Kadoma District, Mashonaland West.
In a nostalgic twist, Engineer Mercy Chigwada's former mentor, Samuel Mwale—who coached the Ngezi High School team during its dominant years and is now with the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe—was also in attendance as a participant.
Speaking after the tournament, he praised Eng Chigwada’s achievement, describing her as an intelligent and composed player whose abilities extend beyond the chessboard.
He further highlighted her diverse accomplishments, noting her past participation in the Miss Zimbabwe pageant representing Mashonaland West, a rare blend of grace and intellectual prowess.
Another Harare City Chess Club member, Dr Collen Tongowona, scooped the Third Runner Up prize after winning 5 out of 7 games in the tournament.
The Bulawayo Chess Association, in collaboration with the Harare Chess Society, successfully hosted the tournament.
The prestigious event, brought together corporate professionals in a unique fusion of intellect, strategy and competition.
The tournament was conducted as an individual championship, played over seven Swiss rounds in accordance with the latest International Chess Federation (FIDE) laws of chess.
Competitors battled across a fast-paced format, with each round testing both tactical sharpness and endurance.
More than 30 players representing five corporates namely: Centre for Disease Control, ZB Bank, City of Harare, CBZ Bank and the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe participated in the landmark event, reflecting growing corporate interest in chess as both a recreational and cognitive discipline.
