Australia Awards Short Course alum Rachiel Bvurire is a Metallurgical Engineer at the Ministry of Mines in Zimbabwe. Technical skills and knowledge transfer is an integral part of her role.

“Although I was a holder of a master’s degree in advanced metallurgical engineering, I often had challenges in presenting information with confidence and clarity. I lacked the art of presentation sufficient to gain respect from artisanal and small-scale miners, the bulk of whom form my clientele.”

All that changed after completing the Mining Governance in Africa Short Course at The University of Queensland, which Rachiel says was a “gamechanger” and motivated her to bring meaningful change to the mining industry in Zimbabwe.

“The change for me has been the confident transformation in public speaking and adaptive communication which has allowed me to reach a diverse audience.”

Rachiel says she has strengthened her abilities and confidence and now has a “fresh, solutions-focused approach”. She credits the Short Course with additional responsibilities entrusted to her including coordinating mine audits and speaking engagements on sustainable mining and says she now feels better equipped to mentor students.

For those of us either living overseas or with family on the other side of the world, we know that life can change in a heartbeat. Whether it’s an unexpected family milestone or a sudden challenge, the last thing you want is an expired passport stopping you from travelling when it matters.

Did you know that many countries and airlines require at least 6 months of validity on your passport to let you board? If yours is close to expiring, now is the time to act.

Check the expiry date of your passport today. If it expires within the next 6 months, put renewing your passport at the top of your to-do list.

Having an up-to-date passport means you’re ready to travel at a moment’s notice.

And don’t forget, you need to allow at least 6 weeks to get a new passport from the time you lodge your application. If you need a passport sooner, call us on 131 232 or contact your local embassy or consulate to discuss your options.
