The Government of Japan has provided approximately USD 6.95 million in support with UNICEF, UNDP, WFP, and UNOPS to help address some of Zimbabwe’s most pressing development challenges, under Japan’s 2024 Supplementary Budget and the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD).

The five transformative projects will improve maternal and child health, prevent malnutrition, strengthen food security, modernize medical waste management, and harness digital innovation to empower families and communities. Together, they will directly benefit more than 86,000 people and reach hundreds of thousands more through digital platforms and life-saving information.

One of the UNICEF-supported projects tackles child wasting in drought-hit Mbire District. Thousands of caregivers benefit from community-based support groups, improved health and nutrition services, and access to clean water and vital information. These initiatives align with Japan’s commitments under the Tokyo Nutrition for Growth Compact.

From supporting vulnerable children and families, to deploying AI-powered agricultural solutions, providing emergency food assistance, and improving healthcare infrastructure, Japan remains committed to building resilient communities and advancing sustainable development in Zimbabwe.

On 21 May, Ambassador Maekawa met with two experts from JICA’s ZAZINAMBO Technical Cooperation Project on Heavy Metal Pollution Control who were visiting the country, and they exchanged views on support for curbing metal pollution in Zimbabwe’s mining sector. Zimbabwe is rich in mineral resources and has a thriving mining industry; however, addressing metal pollution caused by mining which affects the environment, wildlife, and people has become a critical challenge. Through this project, the Government of Japan is supporting the establishment of a network for mining pollution countermeasures and the creation of mechanisms for joint research and education in four countries in the Southern African region, including Zimbabwe.
