ZRP TRAINERS EMBARK ON TOUR OF LIBERATION WAR SHRINES IN ZAMBIA

From 17 to 23 May 2026, a 65-member high-level delegation of senior trainers from the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) conducted a tour of Zimbabwe’s Liberation War Shrines in Zambia. The delegation comprised Training Academy Command, instructors from Mkushi Training Academy (formerly Morris Depot) and Ntabazinduna Training Academy and was joined by 17 Senior Officers from the Zambia Police.

The tour was meant to deepen the trainers’ understanding of Zimbabwe’s armed liberation struggle, reinforce institutional heritage, and strengthen the historical bond between the ZRP and the sites that shaped the nation’s liberation landscape.

Curatorial Guidance and Historical Context
The delegation was accompanied by Ms. Rumbidzai Bvira, Curator of Liberation Heritage who delivered expert presentations on the chronology and significance of each monument, ensuring that the trainers received an authoritative account of the events that transpired at those locations.

Key Sites Visited
The delegation paid homage at three historically pivotal locations:
1. Freedom Camp (Chikumbi): ZAPU/ZIPRA headquarters which was a central military and political training hub for Zimbabwean liberation forces. The camp was attached by the Rhodesians on the 19th of October 1978.
2. Mkushi Girls Camp: A site of immense historical and symbolic value as it was the only camp designed to cater for females during the liberation struggle. The camp was bombed on the 19th of October 1978, the same day Freedom Camp was bombed. It is from this very camp that the ZRP’s Mkushi Training Academy derives its name, under the Government’s national liberation war memorialisation programme.
3. Kabwe St Mary’s Old Cemetery: The final resting place of 14 Zambian Police officers who were ambushed and killed by the Rhodesian Forces as they were on their way to assist the girls who had been bombed at Mkushi Girls Camp. The trainers conducted a wreath-laying ceremony and observed a moment of silence in honour of the police officers.

Significance of the Tour
The journey served multiple strategic objectives for the ZRP as a modern, professional organisation:
• Institutional Identity: Reinforcing why the Mkushi Training Academy carries its name, linking contemporary police training directly to the ethos of sacrifice and discipline forged during the war.
• Curriculum Enrichment: Equipping senior trainers with primary historical knowledge to be cascaded down to all police recruits, ensuring that liberation history remains a core component of police formation.
• Cross-Border Heritage Preservation: Demonstrating the commitment of the Government through NMMZ and ZRP to preserve Zimbabwe’s liberation heritage beyond its national borders.

Preserving Legacy Beyond Borders
The National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe (NMMZ) continues to document, preserve, and promote the country’s liberation heritage. This tour underscores NMMZ’s mandate to maintain historical accuracy and reverence for sites of significance, both within Zimbabwe and in neighbouring states that hosted the liberation struggle.

International Museums Day 2026 Celebrated in Masvingo

The National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe (NMMZ), together with stakeholders in the heritage and cultural sector, yesterday commemorated International Museums Day on 18 May 2026 in Masvingo, where the prestigious National Heritage Education Quiz Finals brought together learners, educators, traditional leaders, government officials, and heritage enthusiasts from across the country.

The commemorations began with a colourful march through Masvingo, which was graced by vibrant drum majorettes and the energetic Mutendi High School Brass Band, creating an atmosphere of pride, celebration, and national unity. The event reflected Zimbabwe’s commitment to preserving and promoting its rich cultural heritage while empowering young people to appreciate the nation’s history and identity.

Entertainment throughout the day was provided by traditional dance groups, poets, and the brass band, whose performances celebrated Zimbabwe’s diverse cultural expressions and added excitement to the commemorations.

The event was attended by several distinguished guests, including the President of the Pan-African Parliament, Chief Fortune Charumbira, traditional leaders Chief Nemamwa and Chief Murinye, together with other chiefs from various provinces.
