It is with profound sorrow that 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐚 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐇𝐨𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 announces the passing of 𝐒𝐫 𝐂𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐞𝐥 𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞.

Sister Christabel will be remembered for her kindness, hard work, dedication and commitment to caring for patients.

Her passing is a great loss to the Mansa General Hospital family, her colleagues, friends and, most importantly, her family and loved ones.

Mansa General Hospital AMS Committee

We are excited to share that we have commenced a 5-day AMR training for 2 chohorts 60 Community-Based Volunteers from across Mansa District.

This training is part of our continued effort to take the AMR conversation beyond health facilities and into the communities where knowledge, behaviours, and everyday practices can make a real difference.

We are grateful to the Zambia National Public Health Institute (ZNPHI) and Amref Health Africa for their support towards making this engagement possible.

UNDERSTANDING CAESAREAN SECTION | TODAY'S RADIO PROGRAM

Today on our radio programme, we opened up an important conversation about Caesarean section (C-section), helping to separate facts from some of the common myths surrounding this life-saving procedure.

Our discussion featured Dr Sakala and Dr Chinyimba and Mr Daka who took us through what every expectant mother and family should know about Caesarean delivery.

A Caesarean section is a major abdominal surgery performed when vaginal delivery may pose a risk to the mother or baby. It may be recommended in situations such as prolonged labour, foetal distress or abnormal positioning of the baby.

A C-section is not a shortcut or a failure to deliver normally. It is a medical procedure performed when it is considered the safest option for mother and baby.

We also discussed recovery, pain management, the possibility of having a vaginal birth after a previous C-section (VBAC), and warning signs to look out for after surgery, including fever, redness or swelling around the wound, worsening pain or unusual discharge.

And perhaps most importantly, we addressed the myths and stigma surrounding Caesarean delivery:

Having a C-section does not make you less of a woman.

Whether your baby arrives through vaginal delivery or Caesarean section, what matters most is a safe delivery and the health of both mother and baby.

To every mother who has had, or may need, a C-section: you are strong, you are brave, and you deserve support before, during and after delivery.

𝐖𝐁𝐖 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 | 𝐂𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐃𝐚𝐲

As 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 comes to a close, we were honoured to welcome our Medical Superintendent, 𝐃𝐫 𝐌𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐝 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐢𝐥𝐢, who joined our mothers and healthcare team in celebrating this important week.

This year's theme, "𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠: 𝐀 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞," reminded us that protecting, promoting and supporting breastfeeding is a shared responsibility. It takes all of us, healthcare providers, families and communities, working together to give every child the best possible start.

In his remarks, Dr Chipili encouraged all breastfeeding mothers, saying:

Breastfeeding provides all the nutrients a baby needs during the first six months of life, protects against many childhood illnesses and plays a vital role in healthy growth and brain development during the first 1,000 days, one of the most critical periods in a child's life.

This world breastfeeding week 1-7 August 2026, we're reminded that breastfeeding gives every child the best start in life. In Zambia, exclusive breastfeeding has dropped from 70% in 2018 to 64% in 2024. But together we can change that.

Mansa General Hospital Conducts Five-Day Fistula Repair Camp

Mansa General Hospital, with support from the Fistula Foundation, is conducting a five-day fistula repair camp aimed at restoring the health, dignity, and quality of life of women living with obstetric fistula.

A total of 40 clients have been successfully mobilised from across the province to receive free fistula repair surgery and comprehensive medical care during the camp. In addition to surgical treatment, the clients will receive counselling, nursing care, and follow-up support to promote full recovery and successful reintegration into their communities.

The initiative reflects the hospital's continued commitment to improving maternal health services and ensuring that women affected by obstetric fistula have access to timely, quality, and life-changing treatment.

Mansa General Hospital expresses its sincere appreciation to the Fistula Foundation and all healthcare professionals whose dedication and collaboration have made this important outreach possible.

Let's continue to support early initiation, exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months, and continued breastfeeding with complementary foods up to 2 years and beyond.

Today, Mansa General Hospital had the privilege of hosting a team from the Ministry of Health's Department of Policy, Planning, and Monitoring & Evaluation for a comprehensive Performance Assessment.

The assessment is an important component of the Ministry of Health's commitment to strengthening health systems through evidence-based performance monitoring, accountability, and continuous quality improvement. It provides an opportunity to objectively review institutional performance, identify areas of excellence, recognize challenges, and develop practical strategies to improve the quality, efficiency, and responsiveness of healthcare services.

Mansa General Hospital warmly embraces this exercise as a valuable learning opportunity. We recognize that regular performance assessments are not merely evaluations but essential tools for institutional growth, informed decision-making, and continuous service improvement. The findings and recommendations will help us strengthen our systems, enhance patient care, optimize resource utilization, and ensure that we consistently deliver high-quality healthcare to the people of Luapula Province.
