☣️ Regional biosecurity preparedness meets operational pressure in Lusaka regional drill
In Lusaka, 22 biosecurity professionals from 11 countries of East and Central Africa came together to take part in an intensive regional exercise on incidents involving biological dual-use agents.
Organised under the EU CBRN Centres of Excellence Initiative, the exercise was formally opened by Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence of Zambia, Maambo Haamaundu, and Deputy Head of the EU Delegation to Zambia Petra Gašparová, underscoring the shared commitment of Zambia and the European Union to building collective resilience against threats that know no borders.
During a full-scale simulation across two locations, border control officers, customs officials, law enforcement personnel and forensic investigators worked in mixed, multi-agency teams through a complex scenario linking a border incident to a clandestine laboratory.
The exercise brought together first response and decontamination, reconnaissance and detection, crime scene investigation, suspect apprehension and interviewing, and the cross-border coordination that ties it all together. The training was carefully adapted to the equipment and protocols already in use across the region, so that what was practised this week can be applied tomorrow.
🫱🏾🫲🏽 Jointly implemented by Projects 99 and 106 of the EU CBRN Risk Mitigation Centres of Excellence, this exercise shows what synergies between complementary EU initiatives can deliver. It reflects the EU's long-term commitment to strengthening regional security in East and Central Africa through capacity building, expertise exchange, and partnership with national authorities.
We commend all participants for their professionalism and dedication and warmly thank the Government of Zambia for their support in organising this essential training.
Strong regions are built on shared knowledge, trust, and cooperation. Exercises like this one are exactly how that foundation is laid.
🇪🇺 This exercise was funded by the European Union. This is in action!
