Transforming the National Food Laboratory into a modern Laboratory, is more than an infrastructure upgrade—it is a strategic investment in the nation’s public health, food safety, and economic resilience. This transformation reflects Zambia’s commitment to integrating advanced technologies, strengthening compliance with international standards such as ISO/IEC 17025, and building a highly skilled workforce capable of delivering accurate, reliable, and timely results.
By modernizing the laboratory, Zambia enhances its capacity to monitor food quality, safeguard consumers, and support both local industries and export markets. It also strengthens the country’s ability to respond to emerging food safety challenges and reinforces confidence in regulatory systems. Ultimately, this transformation is a bold step toward positioning Zambia as a leader in food safety and laboratory excellence within the region.

ZNPHI commences Refurbishment of National Food Laboratory at the University Teaching Hospital to upgrade it to Biosafety Level 2 (BSL-2) status.

The site was officially handed over to the contractor in December 2025, and the refurbishment, along with construction of laboratory and office extensions, is expected to run for eight months.

The project is implemented under the Africa Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) Regional Investment Financing Project (ACDCP) through ZNPHI and the Ministry of Health.
