Ireland is delighted to partner with the World Health Organization and Ministry of Health to support Zambia’s preparedness for Ebola. This contribution of EUR 250,000 (ZMW 5.4 million) will protect communities by supporting early detection and cross-border monitoring across 14 points of entry. 🇮🇪🤝🇿🇲
🇿🇲🤝🇮🇪 Ireland strengthens Zambia's Ebola preparedness
Today, World Health Organization Zambia and the Embassy of Ireland, Zambia marked the signing of an additional EUR 250,000 (approx. ZMW 5.4 million) contribution from Irish Aid to WHO to strengthen Zambia's preparedness for Ebola and other public health threats.
The funding will, among others support the operationalization of national Ebola preparedness guidelines, introduction of Go.Data in priority districts, strengthening of disease surveillance systems, deployment of the Electronic Traveler Information and Monitoring System (eTIMS) at all 14 designated points of entry, infection prevention and control assessments, biosafety and biosecurity training, and simulation exercises to validate operational readiness.
These investments will also further enhance Zambia's capacity for early detection, reporting and investigation of suspected cases, strengthen management of alerts, cases and contacts, improve cross-border surveillance and traveler monitoring, and reinforce rapid response capacity to protect communities from Ebola and other high-consequence infectious diseases.
H.E Ambassador Aidan Fitzpatrick noted "Our additional contribution will further enhance Zambia's ability to detect, report, and respond to public health threats. We commend the Government's leadership and remain committed to supporting efforts to protect the health and wellbeing of the Zambian people".
"Preparedness remains our best defense against public health emergencies. This contribution from Ireland will strengthen Zambia's ability to detect threats early, respond rapidly, and safeguard the health of its people," said WHO Representative Dr Clement Lasuba.
WHO thanks the Government of Ireland and the Embassy of Ireland, Zambia for their continued partnership in strengthening health security and building resilient health systems in Zambia.
