With to***co-related illnesses placing a growing burden on Zambia’s health system, journalists in Chipata have been equipped with skills to report more effectively on ***cotaxation as a critical public health and development issue.

The training organized by CTPD with support from Tax Justice Network Africa, brought together journalists from Diamond TV, ZNBC TV, Times of Zambia, Zambia Daily Mail, ZANIS TV, Phoenix FM, Breeze FM, and other media houses in Eastern Province.

During the training, CTPD Communications and Advocacy Officer, Ms Mwaka Nyimbili led participants on how to transform complex tax data into compelling, human-centered stories that can raise public awareness and stimulate informed policy dialogue.

And speaking during the training, CTPD Lead Public Finance Researcher, Mr. Robert Mwale highlighted the growing health financing challenges facing Zambia amid declining development assistance, rising debt and increasing healthcare demands. He emphasized that health taxes, including to***co taxes, offer a dual benefit by reducing the consumption of harmful products while generating much-needed domestic revenue to support underfunded health systems.

As Zambia begins preparations for the 2027 National Budget following the Ministry of Finance and National Planning's call for budget submissions, CTPD in partnership with Fika Zambia formerly Bridges to Prosperity, convened a stakeholder dialogue on strengthening citizen participation in public finance decision-making.

The dialogue brought together civil society organizations and other stakeholders to explore how citizens can more effectively engage in the budget process and influence national development priorities.

Speaking during the meeting held on 28th May,2026, CTPD Executive Director, Mr. Isaac Mwaipopo, emphasized the need for evidence-based recommendations in budget submissions. He noted that government officials have previously raised concerns about submissions lacking sufficient research, depth, and clarity, which often limits their impact on budget decisions.

Earlier, Fika Zambia Country Director, Mr. Praise Phiri, highlighted the 2027 National Budget as a critical opportunity to increase investment in rural infrastructure and connectivity, describing them as key drivers of improved livelihoods and inclusive development for rural communities.

On this World No To***co Day under the theme "Unmasking the Appeal: Countering Ni****ne and To***co Products," we call on His Excellency the President Hakainde Hichilema to urgently assent to the ***coControlBill.

The to***co industry continues to target young people through attractive packaging, flavours, and marketing tactics that disguise the deadly health consequences of to***co and ni****ne products. Enacting the To***co Control Bill will provide Zambia with a stronger legal framework to protect public health, especially our children and future generations.

The time to act is now. Let us put people first before profits and safeguard the health of all Zambians.

Hundreds of residents in Chipangali District in Eastern Province yesterday turned out in large numbers to commemorate ***coDay, joining the rest of the world in raising awareness about the dangers of to***co and ni****ne products under the global theme, “Unmasking the Appeal: Countering To***co and Ni****ne Products.”

The event, which brought together community members, traditional leaders, health practitioners, youths and civil society organizations, highlighted the growing need to protect communities from the harmful effects of to***co use and the aggressive marketing tactics employed by the to***co and ni****ne industry.

Chipangali, one of Zambia’s major to***co-producing districts, provided a significant backdrop for this year’s commemoration. Eastern Province Permanent Secretary , Paul Thole, emphasized the importance of balancing economic activities with public health concerns, particularly as to***co-related illnesses continue to place a heavy burden on families and health systems.

The colorful event was characterized by vibrant cultural performances, with local dance groups entertaining the crowd through traditional dances that carried messages about healthy living and disease prevention. Learners and youth groups also performed poems that challenged the to***co industry's marketing strategies and encouraged young people to reject to***co and ni****ne products.

Today, stakeholders from government, civil society, academia, industry and development partners gathered for a Multi-Stakeholder Dialogue on Zambia’s (2024–2028).

The dialogue organized by CTPD in partnership with the Natural Resource Governance Institute and the Ministry of Mines , provided an important platform to reflect on the implementation of the Critical Minerals Strategy, identify priority actions, and strengthen collaboration towards sustainable and inclusive mineral development in Zambia.

During the event CTPD Executive Director , Mr. Isaac Mwaipopo emphasized the need to ensure that Zambia’s critical minerals wealth drives industrialization, job creation, and sustainable economic transformation.

Natural Resource Governance Institute Africa Director, Ms. Nafi Quarshie, stressed that Mineral wealth alone does not guarantee development, as Africa has previously experienced resource booms where raw materials were exported while value addition and industrial gains benefited other regions.

She added that Zambia’s real opportunity lies not merely in increasing mineral production, but in leveraging its resources to promote industrialization, economic diversification, innovation, job creation and sustainable long-term public value.
