BA NDOLA|| Govt to Revive Indeni Refinery at $1.2 Billion

By Masauso Mkwayaya (ZNBC)

Government plans to revive the Indeni Petroleum Refinery in Ndola on the Copperbelt at a cost of 1.2 billion US dollars.

The project will be undertaken through the Industrial Development Corporation -IDC.

In an interview with ZNBC News, IDC Chief Executive Officer CORNWELL MULEYA said investors are on standby and ready to take up the project.

Mr. MULEYA said the revival of Indeni will give Government greater control over fuel production and help ensure affordable fuel for Zambians.

He said the project is expected to create 3,000 jobs during the construction phase and about 800 permanent jobs once the refinery becomes fully operational.

Mr. MULEYA said the project will also help restore Ndola's position as one of the country's major industrial hubs.

He said the refinery will have a wider impact on other industries, with by-products such as bitumen and polyethylene expected to support road construction and plastics manufacturing.

The Democratic Republic of Congo has banned the export of copper and cobalt concentrates to encourage more local processing and retain a greater share of its mineral wealth.

Congo is the world’s largest cobalt producer and the second-largest copper supplier. The immediate ban affects major mining companies, including Swiss-based Glencore, Canada’s Ivanhoe Mines and Chinese firms such as CMOC, Huayou Cobalt and Zijin Mining.

One-year exemptions may reportedly be granted for strategically important exports. New taxes on valuable mining by-products will also be introduced after a three-month transition period.

The Democratic Republic of Congo 🇨🇩 has received its first batch of refined gold bars at the central bank, marking the start of a national program to rebuild the country’s monetary gold reserves.

For nearly 50 years, the country held very little monetary gold, as much of it left through informal trade.

A recent agreement between the central bank and state-owned DRC Gold Trading SA, supported by a new refinery in Kalemie, now allows locally mined gold to be refined and added to reserves.

The initiative is expected to improve transparency, strengthen revenue collection, and retain more value within the country.
