Chimfunshi was founded in 1983 when a game ranger brought a badly wounded infant chimpanzee to the cattle ranch of David and Sheila Siddle, a British couple who had lived along the Zambian Copperbelt since the 1950s. The Siddles nursed that chimp – named "Pal" – back to health, thereby establishing a tradition of care and respect that forms the legacy of the sanctuary. Sheila and David Siddles’ sp

irit, compassion, and dedication have successfully established the Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage in northern Zambia as a groundbreaking haven for over 147 chimpanzees and various other injured and unwanted animals. In recognition of their service to animal welfare and conservation, the Siddles have been the recipients of numerous honors and awards, including the United Nations Environment Programme’s Global 500 Award (2000), the Audi / Terra Nova nomination (2001), a special commendation from the Nedbank / mail & Guardian Green Trust Awards (2000), and the Jane Goodall Award (1995). In 2001, the Siddles were granted MBEs by Queen Elizabeth II in a ceremony at Buckingham Palace. Chimfunshi Wild Life Orphanage Trust is a non-profit organization that does not receive any government funds. 🌿🐒 We are incredibly grateful to IHS and GardaWorld for their generous support in providing us with a new radio communication system.

Chimfunshi covers more than 10,000 hectares of remote forest and wetlands, with our communities, school, farm, veterinary facilities and chimpanzee enclosures spread across a vast landscape. Reliable communication is essential and mobile coverage is inconsistent or absent.

This new system will transform the way our teams communicate. Most importantly, this means faster responses when it matters most, whether responding to a chimpanzee escape, a medical emergency, a bushfire, a vehicle breakdown or potential poaching activity.

This investment is not only about radios. It is about connecting people, protecting wildlife and making Chimfunshi safer for everyone. 💚

🌿🎣 Learning to protect the Kafue River! 💧

Our second Nature Camp of the year brought together 220 children for a week-long programme focused on sustainable fishing practices and why protecting the Kafue River today is essential to ensuring it remains a resource for future generations.

A big thank you to the Ministry of Fisheries officer who joined us to teach the children about legal and illegal fishing methods, helping them understand how responsible fishing can protect fish populations and the river ecosystem. 🐟

The week also included a fun fishing competition 🎣 and, a special treat from Wendy, who prepared delicious cupcakes for all the children! 🧁💚

A huge thank you to Zoo Krefeld , Elephant Charge and Jane Goodall Institut Deutschland for supporting our Nature Camps and helping us inspire the next generation of conservationists. 🌍🐒

💧 Clean water, stronger communities. 💚

A huge thank you to Vendée Eau for your continued support in helping us ensure that families have reliable and sustainable access to safe water.

Over the past few months, following the rainy season, our team carried out essential work on our community boreholes — including upgrading boreholes with solar-powered water pumps and installing new water tanks, helping make these systems more sustainable and ensuring they can serve communities for longer, as well as flushing boreholes to maintain good water quality.

Access to clean water makes a fundamental difference to everyday life, and we are incredibly grateful to Vendée Eau for helping us make this possible. 🌍💧

It was a wonderful opportunity to bring everyone together at our farm—from our herdsmen and gardeners to other members of our community and visitors—for a day of friendship, laughter, and celebration.

The day was filled with games, delicious food, music, and shared moments that recognised the hard work and dedication of those who help our farm thrive every day. Thank you to everyone who joined us and made the celebration so special!

📚🌿 Learning beyond the classroom at Chimfunshi! 🐒💚

Over the past weeks, we have been delighted to welcome many students from local schools for an educational visit to Chimfunshi. These young learners had the opportunity to discover our work, learn about chimpanzee conservation, and see our rescued chimpanzees while gaining a better understanding of the importance of protecting wildlife and their natural environment. 🌍

Through these visits, we hope to inspire curiosity, compassion, and a new generation of conservation ambassadors.
