Some careers are carefully planned, while others unfold through unexpected opportunities that ultimately lead us exactly where we are meant to be. For Shannon Schroeder, Municipal Prosecutor at Breede Valley Municipality, her journey has been shaped by a passion for justice, a willingness to embrace opportunity and a genuine desire to help people. Born and raised in Paarl, Shannon always knew she wanted to pursue a career in law. After completing her studies at the University of the Western Cape, she began her articles in civil law before an unexpected opportunity changed the direction of her career. Nearing the end of her articles, a Court Manager encouraged her to apply for the National Prosecuting Authority's Prosecutor Aspirant Programme. She took the leap, successfully completed the programme and was admitted as an attorney on the very same day. More than 15 years later, Shannon continues to serve as a prosecutor, bringing the same sense of purpose to her work.
For Shannon, however, working in a courtroom has never been simply about enforcing the law. It is about understanding the people behind each case. Working with traffic and municipal by-law offences has shown her that every person who enters a courtroom has a different story and set of circumstances. While legislation must always guide decisions, Shannon believes that justice should never lose sight of compassion. This philosophy is reflected in the approach of the Breede Valley Municipal Court, where people are given an opportunity to explain their circumstances, submit written representations and be heard before decisions are made. βThe most rewarding part is helping people,β she says, adding that sometimes βpeople just need someone to listen.β For Shannon, striking the balance between accountability and understanding is what makes public service so meaningful.
Her journey to Breede Valley Municipality was itself an unexpected one. After gaining experience prosecuting in Wolseley and Paarl, Shannon accepted a position at Mossel Bay Municipality. While settling into her new office, she came across correspondence relating to Breede Valley Municipality's preparations to establish its own Municipal Court. One familiar name caught her attention, leading her to contact Mr Raymond Esau. Although the conversation was brief, it planted a seed. Later, while working at George Municipality, Shannon came across a vacancy for Municipal Prosecutor: Breede Valley Municipality while waiting for a meeting to begin. βIt just felt right,β she recalls. Four months later, Shannon joined Breede Valley Municipality, where she has now proudly served for the past decade. Looking back, she believes some opportunities arrive at exactly the right time.
Throughout her career, Shannon has also navigated the challenges of working in a profession where women can sometimes feel they have to prove themselves before their abilities are recognised. Rather than allowing this to discourage her, she chose to let her work speak for itself through dedication, professionalism and consistency. She also believes women should never feel the need to hide the qualities that make them who they are. Compassion, empathy and a practical understanding of people's circumstances can be powerful strengths, particularly in public service. βAs long as you know what you bring to the table, don't shy away from it,β she says. Behind her professional journey is also a strong support system. Shannon credits her colleagues for creating a workplace where people support and celebrate one another, while outside of work, her husband, parents and extended family remain her greatest source of strength. βMy family is my pillar,β she says.
Shannon's message to young women is simple: believe in yourself and follow your dreams. She encourages women not to allow the opinions of others to determine what they are capable of achieving, while also reminding them that asking for help is not a weakness. βYou never know who is willing to help you.β From a young girl growing up in Paarl with a passion for law to a Municipal Prosecutor who has spent a decade serving the Breede Valley community, Shannon Schroeder's story is one of courage, compassion and quiet determination. Her journey is a reminder that success is not always about following a perfect plan, sometimes it is about recognising an opportunity, taking the leap and trusting that the path will lead you where you are meant to be.
