Since I registered as a private practitioner I’ve manage to work in a lot of settings but the last four years was something special. I’ve worked almost exclusively in a medical setting and I’ve met very talented people, experts in their own right. Today was my last day on-site and it was sad to close my office door and to hand in my office key and access card. Although is is sad to close one chapter I am excited to announce that I’ll be joining UWC as a lecturer in January 2024, another opportunity that I embrace wholeheartedly. I am humbled to have an opportunity to guide and facilitate the personal and professional growth of young people.

My appointment started with a phone call one Friday afternoon and was concluded with the signing of a contract on 6 December 2023.

I am closing my practice for all clinical work but will continue to collaborate with partners in the training and facilitating world. For those who do not know I will walk in the footstep of great people who moulded me as a shy, naive student at UWC many moons ago. I need to stay humble and will tread carefully because I’ll be walking on holy ground.

Today we commemorate World Mental Health day with the theme “Mental Health is a Universal Human Right. We commemorate WMHD in a world in war and conflict where we give our selective media attention for a day or two at most just to continue with life as if nothing is happening.

As South Africans we are known to be resilient but in all honesty we just normalise our stressors and experiences, the violence on the Cape Flats, femicide, crime, the cost of living, poverty and unemployment and the list go on. I believe that we never recognise or acknowledge the impact of these events on our mental health as a nation, because our mental health is being influenced by burnout, stress, grief and loss, physical and “major” traumatic events. It is time that we are verbalise what we experience, that we acknowledge that it is “ok not being ok” as a means of breaking the stigma about mental illness. It is time that we stop to “suffer” in silence and frown on those who ask for help, because it is so easy to snap out of “it”.
It is time for us to be present and support those in need.

As with all “days” we remember and do our events but let’s make a commitment with this one, to focus on and to prioritise our own wellbeing the wellbeing of our loved ones and the wellbeing of others, it is after all a human rights matter…
