ELECTRICITY INTERRUPTION DUE TO CONDUCTOR THEFT

Dear Residents of Vryheid,

Please be advised that an incident of vandalism has occurred in the Bree Street, High Street and President Street areas, where Copper Conductors were stolen, resulting in an electricity supply interruption affecting parts of the town.

Municipal technicians are currently on site attending to the matter. The estimated time for restoration of electricity supply is 16h00 today, subject to the extent of the damage and repair progress.

Residents are strongly urged to treat all electrical connections, appliances, and installations as live during the outage, as power may be restored without prior notice.

We apologise for the inconvenience caused and thank you for your patience, cooperation, and understanding while repair work is underway.

The Vryheid Community Police Forum and Youth Desk Crime Prevention, in partnership with the South African Police Service and AbaQulusi Local Municipality, successfully hosted inter-school games which include Vryheid Comprehensive Secondary School, KwaBhanya Secondary School, Filidi Secondary School, and Mpofini Secondary School.

The event aimed to unite learners and promote positive relationships among schools, while addressing challenges affecting young people such as gangsterism, teenage pregnancy, substance abuse, and gender-based violence.

Hon. Mayor Sifiso Mkhwanazi, Chairperson of the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security Cluster, encouraged learners to continue showing unity, respect and love towards one another, reminding them that there is no place for animosity because they are all one community. The motivational speaker, Triple S Mhlungu, also inspired learners with valuable lessons about the stages of life and the importance of being disciplined and obedient young people.

The day was filled with excitement, sportsmanship, and positivity. Congratulations to Mpofini Secondary School for winning the Soccer Cup and KwaBhanya Secondary School for taking home the Netball Cup. In the spirit of inclusivity and encouragement, His Worship the Mayor ensured that all participating teams received new sports kits and medals.

Electricity Interruption Due to Conductor Theft

Please be advised that an incident of copper conductor theft occurred on West Street, opposite the Vryheid High School hostel. As a result, the electricity supply in the affected area has been interrupted.

Due to planned maintenance at the Bhekuzulu Substation, repair work related to the theft on West Street will resume only after 11:00 a.m. today.

Residents are advised to treat all electrical connections as live during the outage period.

PLANNED POWER OUTAGE NOTICE;

Dear Residents of Vryheid and Bhekuzulu,

Please be informed that the Bhekuzulu Substation will be switched-off on an emergency basis on Thursday, 21 May 2026 (tomorrow), to allow for urgent maintenance work.

The Municipality has received reports from both the contractor and electricians regarding the unusual noise within the substation. As a precautionary measure, inspections and maintenance will be conducted on the breakers, oil, and busbars to prevent any potential damage or explosion at the substation.

In addition, phase rotation corrections will be carried out for Transnet following reports of machinery operating in reverse.

*Day 2 of 2 | Career Expo 2026;*

19/05/26 Yesterday marked the final day of the Zululand Department of Education Career Expo at Cecil Emmett Hall, which began yesterday. The event brought together DUT, MUT, TVET Colleges, and various stakeholders to empower and guide learners within the AbaQulusi Local Municipality on their future career opportunities.

The Mayor of AbaQulusi Local Municipality, Sifiso Mkhwanazi, inspired attendees with words of encouragement and motivation regarding education and career development.

The mayor also thanked the various stakeholders for their contributions to the youth's future. Addressing the gathering of hundreds of learners, Mkhwanazi emphasized the importance of education. He further reminded the learners that they are future leaders, urging them to choose their career paths wisely by following their hearts rather than just following their friends.
