Another story of hope
​Against the Floods: How a Vredendal medical team saved a newborn.

​When severe floods isolated Vredendal Hospital this week, a deteriorating newborn couldn't be transferred.

​With zero access to a specialised unit, Dr. Didier Ngoie and his team turned the facility into an improvised "Night-Shift ICU." Thanks to a critical equipment delivery by Matzikama Paramedic Services and remote guidance from Tygerberg Hospital, the baby was stabilised and safely airlifted by AMS the next morning.

Neem asseblief kennis dat die brug se water tans met 70mm elke 15 minute styg en daar vermoed word dat die brug binnekort oorspoel sal word. Alle inwoners wat op Vredendal-Noord woonagtig is, sowel as inwoners van Vredendal-Suid, word dringend versoek om so spoedig moontlik huiswaarts te keer.
Die brug sal om 11:30 gesluit word. GEEN toegang sal toegelaat word nie. Slegs noodgevalle sal toegang verkry.
Inwoners word verder versoek om veilig te bly en warm aan te trek gedurende die koue en nat toestande. Verskoning word gevra vir enige ongerief.

Please note that the water level at the bridge is currently rising by 70mm every 15 minutes, and it is suspected that the bridge may soon be flooded over.
All residents living in Vredendal North, as well as residents of Vredendal South, are urgently requested to return home as soon as possible. The bridge will be closed at 11:30.
NO access will be permitted. Only emergency cases will be allowed access.
Residents are further requested to remain safe and keep warm during the cold and wet conditions.

⚠️ URGENT PUBLIC NOTICE: MATZIKAMA AREA IN FLOOD ⚠️

Residents are hereby urgently informed that flooding is currently being experienced within the Matzikama area due to rising water levels in the Olifants River system.

Following notification received from the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) and the Lower Olifants River Water Users Association (LORWUA), it has been confirmed that all 13 sluices at the Clanwilliam Dam have been opened due to increased inflows and rising dam levels.

Residents in low-lying areas and flood-prone areas are strongly advised to remain on high alert, prepare for likely evacuation and consider alternative accommodation arrangements where possible.
Residents are encouraged to:

• Move valuable belongings, livestock and vehicles to higher ground.
• Avoid crossing flooded roads, bridges and low-water crossings.
• Keep children away from rivers, canals and flooded areas.
• Continue monitoring official municipal communication platforms for emergency updates.

Residents who are unable to make alternative accommodation arrangements and who may require emergency assistance are requested to urgently contact the Matzikama Disaster Coordinator or Matzikama Call Centre at the contact details provided below:
