16 June 1976 (Youth Day)
On 16 June 1976, thousands of black school learners in Soweto took to the streets to protest against the apartheid government's decision to enforce Afrikaans as a medium of instruction in schools.
The peaceful march was met with police violence, and officers opened fire on the students. One of the first children to be killed was Hector Pieterson, whose death became a powerful symbol of the struggle against apartheid. Many other young people were injured or lost their lives during the protests and the unrest that followed.
The events of 16 June 1976, known as the Soweto Uprising, marked a turning point in South Africa's fight for freedom. The courage of the youth inspired greater resistance to apartheid both within the country and around the world.
Today, South Africans commemorate Youth Day to honour the bravery, sacrifice, and contribution of the young people who fought for equality, justice, and a democratic South Africa.
The youth of 1976 fought for the freedom we enjoy today. Their courage and sacrifice must never be forgotten.πΏπ¦
