ENGLISH HL ANNUAL SPEECH CONTEST 2026 - CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF EXCELLENCE

Twenty-three learners from the FET phase heeded to the call of MVSS' Department of LLC to participate in its third annual Speech Contest which was held on Monday, 18 May 2026. This year's contest called for learners to choose from an array of prescribed topics under the theme 'Celebrating 50 Years of Excellence'.

Our learners delivered excellent speeches and overall the contest was a remarkable display of public speaking skills in true MVSS style. Principal, Mr I.C. Govender commended all participants on their superb speeches which honoured our prestigious institution's 50 years of academic excellence. He also extended his gratitude to co-ordinator of the contest, Mrs T. D. Nair-Govender and the English Home Language team on yet another successful speech contest.

The Best Speakers in the respective Grades were as follows:

Grade 10: Andile Gumede
Grade 11: Anami Shangase
Grade 12: Kayleen Choonoo and Precious Cossa

We would like to congratulate all participants on their hard work and dedication which contributed to the resounding success of this year's speech contest!

Women in Science 2026 Inspires Our Learners

Four of our learners, accompanied by Mrs S. Sewpersad, recently attended the Women in Science 2026 event hosted by UKZN under the theme “Accelerating Equity in Science.”

Representing our school were:

Carmel Rose Royappen (10A)

Sonali Sooknunan (10A)

Natara Soobramoney (10B)

Snethemba Mbokazi (11A)

The learners enjoyed insightful talks, panel discussions, and networking opportunities with inspiring women in STEM fields. A highlight of the event was the keynote address by Dr Carla Mitchell, an Associate Professor and researcher in Chemical Engineering at the University of Cape Town, whose inspiring journey encouraged learners to pursue careers in science with confidence and determination. Having an execute MBA from the International Space University in France and being Mission director of Africa to Moon created great excitement and inspiration to the learners.
