WATCH: A tale of 3 kittens from our Caring for Cats Project.

Meet Sunshine (now Daisy), River and Tux (now Mr. Nimbus) — three tiny kittens trapped within the Riverside Precinct between March and May, who have all since been adopted and found their forever homes.

As part of our Caring for Cats project, most feral and stray cats that enter our Trap–Neuter–Return (TNR) programme are sterilised, health-checked, and then safely returned to their original environment. This helps reduce overpopulation while protecting both the community and the environment.

We are also proud to share that we are close to having trapped 40 cats within the Riverside Precinct through the programme.

However, when we come across kittens, the approach is a little different. After being rescued, kittens are taken to Nelspruit Animal Hospital for all their health checks, treatment and care, Stories like Daisy, River and Mr. Nimbus remind us why this project matters — every rescue makes a difference.

This International Day for Biological Diversity, we celebrate the incredible role Riverside’s wetlands play in protecting and sustaining life within our community.

Ranging in size from 1,500 to 38,000 square metres, these wetlands are far more than just natural open spaces — they are living ecosystems that provide essential habitat for birds, frogs, insects, fish, and countless other species that contribute to the health and balance of our environment.

Wetlands play a vital role in filtering water, reducing flooding, supporting biodiversity, and strengthening environmental resilience. They are an important part of Riverside’s natural heritage and a reminder that healthy ecosystems are essential for healthy communities.

This year’s theme, *“Acting locally for global impact,”* reflects the importance of protecting the natural spaces around us. Riverside’s wetlands remain in good health through the ongoing work of the Greater Riverside Biodiversity Initiative, together with local companies within the Riverside CID, who continue to support the conservation and management of these valuable ecosystems.

By protecting our wetlands today, we help preserve biodiversity and build a more sustainable future for generations to come. 🌿

Earlier this week, bees were officially named the most important living species on Earth. Today, on World Bee Day, we’d like to share a few interesting facts about these incredible flying insects — and invite you to visit the Riverside Reserve, located in the Riverside Precinct on Wildberry Boulevard, where you’ll spot many bees hard at work in nature.

Did you know?

• Honeybees can fly up to 25 km/h.
• Their wings beat around 200 times every second.
• Bees help pollinate 70 out of the world’s 100 major food crops.
• They pollinate trees and flowers by transferring pollen between plants.
• This helps plants produce seeds and fruit — supporting ecosystems and our food supply.

Small pollinators. Big impact.

Last week, one of our traps at Stay Easy held a very unexpected little visitor — a tiny black-and-white kitten we immediately named Tux.

After being rescued, Tux was taken to Nelspruit Animal Hospital for all his health checks and care. While we made sure he was safe and healthy, we couldn’t help but wonder where this little kitten’s journey would lead next.

Then something wonderful happened. Nic and Nichole from Nic & Nic walked into our offices and instantly fell in love with him. It was clear from the very beginning that Tux had found his forever family.

Now settling in beautifully in his new home, he enjoyed his very first meal while sitting on their children’s laps, already surrounded by love and attention. Like all cherished pets, he has already received a new name from the children — Mr. Nimbus.

Stories like this remind us why the Caring for Cats project is so important. Every rescue, every health check, every sterilisation, and every adoption helps create a kinder and healthier future for animals in our community.
