OPINION: It was a profound honour to address the role-players and those who gathered at the opening of the Pure Hearts Safehouse in Tongaat on Saturday. We gathered to open not just a building, but a sanctuary, writes Prof. Dasarath Chetty.

On 6 June 2026, Tongaat Child and Family Welfare proudly launched our new Safe House, a dedicated place of protection, care and hope for vulnerable mothers and children facing crisis situations.

This launch marks an important milestone in our ongoing commitment to protecting children, strengthening families and supporting those who need help during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.

For decades, Tongaat Child and Family Welfare has served the Tongaat community through child protection services, family support, counselling, foster care support and intervention programmes. Every day, our team is faced with situations where children and families need urgent assistance, safety and compassionate care.

The opening of our Safe House allows us to respond more effectively to mothers and children affected by abuse, neglect, domestic violence and trauma. It provides a secure space where they can receive emergency shelter, emotional support, guidance and access to further care while longer-term solutions are being arranged.

This Safe House is more than a facility. It is a place where healing can begin. It is a place where dignity is restored. It is a place where vulnerable mothers and children can feel protected, heard and supported.

We are deeply grateful to every donor, partner, stakeholder, community member and supporter who helped make this vision a reality. Your contribution has helped create a safe space that will make a meaningful difference in the lives of those who need it most.

The launch of our Safe House is a reminder of what can be achieved when a community comes together with compassion and purpose. As Tongaat Child and Family Welfare, we remain committed to serving, protecting and empowering children and families in our community.

Together, we can continue building a safer, more caring future for every child and family who turns to us for help.

Two Years On: Remembering the Tongaat Tornado and Honouring Community Support

Tongaat Child Welfare Society extends our heartfelt gratitude to all donors, community-based organisations, corporates, faith-based groups, volunteers, and individuals who came to the aid of our community following the devastating tornado of 3 June 2024.

Your generosity, compassion, and unwavering support brought hope to families during one of the most challenging times in our community’s history.

As we mark two years since this tragic event, we continue to remember and appreciate every act of kindness that helped our community recover and rebuild.

To those who experienced loss and suffering, our thoughts and prayers remain with you today and always.

Thank you for standing with Tongaat when it mattered most.

Celebrating Family Month, strengthening families and protecting children

On 22 May 2026, Tongaat Child Welfare Society hosted a Family Month Programme to raise awareness about child abuse and neglect and promote the protection, wellbeing, and rights of children within the family unit.

Parents, caregivers, and community members were educated on the causes, impact, and prevention of child abuse and neglect, as well as the legal and social consequences that may result from failing to protect children.

The programme focused on strengthening parenting skills, promoting positive discipline, enhancing parent–child relationships, and equipping families with practical strategies to create safe, nurturing, and supportive home environments.

Together, we can build stronger families and ensure that every child grows up protected, valued, and empowered.
