2020 has been an extraordinary year for many, with more ups and downs than we probably care to remember! But amongst it all there have been little things to celebrate. For us, that’s been the ongoing conservation of Marataba and all our wildlife and of course, the opening of Founders and Explorers camps. Onwards and upwards to 2021 - and we can’t wait to welcome you through our doors! ⁣⁣

Beach holiday plans changed this year? Come and enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the Waterberg instead! At Marataba Conservation Camps there is availability from 3 January at Founders Camp and 4 January at Explorers Camp and we're here to assist with last-minute bookings!

Founders Camp is in a magnificent setting right on the Matlabas River. This is an exclusive-use camp with four tented suites, giving absolute privacy. The camp comes with its own private game vehicle, a boat for water-based safari cruises and a dedicated conservation guide. Forward-thinking, hands-on conservation activities offer a unique opportunity for guests who are also loving our wild walks and discovering the hidden gorges and mountain pools of the dramatic Waterberg Massif on foot.

Marataba is home to a resilient breeding population of cheetah that were reintroduced into the Park following decades of persecution prior to the proclamation of the Park. Despite significant global threats, including human wildlife conflict, habitat loss and genetic constraints, cheetah are also faced with local threats from larger competitive carnivores such as lions and spotted hyaena.

With the assistance of the Endangered Wildlife Trust the cheetah reintroduced onto Marataba were carefully sourced from populations that were large-predator wary and had the best chance of success of adapting to the conditions at Marataba.

Today, Marataba boasts a healthy population of successful cheetah and their dispersing offspring will be made available to other parks and reserves in a bid to maintain as much genetic diversity in the cheetah metapopulation of Southern Africa as possible.

Monitoring changes and trends in priority species populations within protected areas plays an important role in protecting both the animals and the landscape at Marataba. To improve our monitoring effort, Marataba Conservation recently upskilled two team members who now spend time out in the Park providing a constant flow of reliable data to assist in decision-making.

After being put through the test along with other Marataba staff members, Fipa Mathunjwa and Kaiser Morake were selected to attend a Basic Armed Field Ranger course at the Southern African Wildlife College (SAWC). During the selection process all the candidates were put under physical stress to assess their mental capabilities and tenacity under pressure. All staff members did exceedingly well and it was no easy task to select only two.
On the 13th of September Fipa and Kaiser travelled to the SAWC to start their journey of becoming wildlife monitors, our eyes and ears in the bush. The guys were pushed hard from the first day of the course with six weeks PT, drill work and lectures on conservation subjects.

Both Fipa and Kaiser thrived in this discipline-centred environment and have returned motivated and confident. They have been deployed and are stalking rhino, removing alien plants and protecting trees from elephant damage with great fervour – in their own words: ‘rangers never sleep, they only rest’!

Marataba Conservation Camps recently launched its second tented camp. Explorers Camp overlooks an active waterhole visited frequently by herds of elephant who come to quench their thirst – a favourite spot for photographers and children – and at sunset the views from here of the Waterberg Massif are spectacular. Relaxed and private, Explorers Camp is small enough to book exclusively: ideally for up to 14 guests or for two families with up to 10 guests. It has two private vehicles and dedicated conservation guides.

Marataba Conservation Camps encourage active participation: from hands-on wildlife management and ecological conservation to exploring the wilderness on foot, this groundbreaking conservation-focused safari experience truly meets the need to travel with a purpose.
