A Day in the Life of a SITI Officer

When people think of security officers, they often think of arrests and emergency responses.

In reality, much of a SITI officer’s day is spent on proactive work that often goes unseen: conducting patrols, monitoring the area, responding to community concerns, reporting infrastructure issues, assisting residents and visitors, and helping to prevent crime before it happens.

The goal is not only to respond to incidents, but to create an environment where residents, businesses, students and visitors feel safe, where public spaces are well managed, and where issues can be addressed before they escalate.

This is achieved through visible patrols, rapid response, community engagement and close collaboration with Law Enforcement, SAPS, municipal departments and other security partners.

Every patrol, report and response contributes to a safer, cleaner and more connected Stellenbosch.

| DID YOU KNOW?

It only takes a few seconds.

Whether you’re studying, working remotely, meeting friends for coffee or enjoying a meal, always keep your valuables within sight and under your control.

* Don’t leave your cellphone on the table
* Don’t leave your laptop unattended
* Keep handbags and valuables close to you
* Stay aware of your surroundings

Pickpocketing and opportunistic theft can happen in busy public spaces, even during the day and when people are nearby.

A moment of distraction is all it takes.

Stay alert. Keep it close or lose it.

• Public nuisance and illegal structure complaints addressed
• Fines issued for public drinking, public urination, illegal trading, fires in public spaces, and parking violations
• Illegal dumping complaints reported for municipal follow-up
• EMS assisted with a medical incident
• Arrest for possession of an imitation firearm

DID YOU KNOW?

Cape Town’s inner-city public toilet project has officially reached 1 million users - providing cleaner, safer and more accessible public sanitation facilities in the CBD.

The initiative, led by the Cape Town Central City Improvement District (CCID), focuses on improving public spaces, dignity and urban management in high-footfall areas.

It raises an important question:

💬 Should Stellenbosch explore something similar in the CBD?

Would public ablution facilities help improve:
• Cleanliness in public spaces?
• Conditions around problem areas?
• The overall experience for residents, businesses and visitors?

REAL HELP CREATES REAL CHANGE

Poverty, unemployment, and addiction remain major challenges in South Africa, and many vulnerable individuals need support, compassion, and access to meaningful assistance.

One of the most effective ways to help is by supporting organisations that work daily to provide sustainable, fair, and long-term solutions to those in need.

Instead of creating dependency through handouts, we encourage the public to support NGOs that offer real intervention, rehabilitation, shelter, food support, counselling, skills development, and other essential services.

Whether through your time, donations, or resources, your support can make a lasting impact where it is needed most.
