SAFETY NOTICE TO CYCLISTS IN STELLENBOSCH

Stellenbosch Traffic Services, Law Enforcement and the South African Police Service (SAPS) continue to conduct regular visible patrols and enforcement operations along identified cycling routes, including the R310 Helshoogte Road, R304 near Kayamandi, and other areas of concern within the Stellenbosch municipal area.

These collaborative efforts aim to improve safety, deter criminal activity, and maintain a visible law enforcement presence for all road users, including cyclists.

Cyclists and community members are encouraged to remain vigilant and to formally report suspicious activity, criminal incidents or safety concerns. While information shared on community and social media groups can help raise awareness, formal reporting is important to ensure incidents can be recorded, investigated, and considered as part of crime pattern analysis and operational planning.

PARKING REMINDER | “I’m only going to be a minute…”

A quick stop is still subject to parking rules.

Please help keep Stellenbosch accessible and safe by respecting No Parking and No Stopping restrictions, keeping entrances and access points clear, leaving designated accessible parking available for authorised users, respecting loading zones and parking fully within marked bays.

Stellenbosch Municipality’s Parking By-law includes specific provisions relating to parking restrictions, loading zones, bus stops, parking across entrances, designated parking for disabled persons, marked parking bays and time-limited parking.

Parking restrictions aren’t only about avoiding a fine. A vehicle left in the wrong place, even briefly, can prevent someone from accessing their home or business, obstruct other road users or occupy a space specifically reserved for someone who needs it.

A convenient parking spot for you shouldn’t become an inconvenience for someone else.

Park legally. Keep access clear. Be considerate.

Weekly Safety Update | SITI in Action

SITI Public Safety Officers remained active across the SITI-SRA area this past week, conducting proactive patrols, responding to incidents, and assisting members of the public.

Key incidents and interventions included:

* A suspicious male was apprehended in possession of a dangerous weapon and an imitation firearm. The suspect was linked to the robbery of two individuals.

* Suspicious persons were addressed during patrols, with tik pipes found and destroyed where applicable. Tik pipes were also found during Taxi Rank operations.
* Complaints relating to vagrancy, sleeping in public, illegal structures and bin scratching were addressed.
* Fines were issued for drinking in public, making an illegal fire and parking on red lines.
* Medical assistance was provided to a severely intoxicated student who had fallen and sustained a head injury. EMS was contacted.
* Officers assisted a member of the public by helping to push a broken-down vehicle out of the roadway to improve the flow of traffic.

These incidents once again highlight the importance of proactive patrols, visible policing, and community awareness. If something doesn’t look or feel right, report it.

Thank you to Law Enforcement, the Rent-a-Cop Project, SAPS, emergency services, and our other safety partners for their continued collaboration.

⚠️ WARNING | WhatsApp Scams

WhatsApp account takeovers are affecting South Africans. Once an account is compromised, scammers may impersonate the owner and ask their contacts for “emergency” money.

Protect yourself: Never share your WhatsApp verification code, enable Two-Step Verification, check your Linked Devices regularly and avoid suspicious links or QR codes.

Most importantly, if someone you know suddenly asks you for money on WhatsApp, call them directly before paying anything.

Stop. Check. Call. Then act.
