Support during loss

Our team at False Bay Primary shared:

"One of the most meaningful moments in my work was observing the progress of a learner who had been referred for grief support. Over time, I noted significant emotional growth and resilience in her healing journey.

She expressed with great excitement that she is now able to reflect on the memories she shared with her loved one without becoming overwhelmed by sadness or tears. Instead, she is able to hold those memories with a sense of warmth, gratitude, and acceptance.

Witnessing her transformation and renewed sense of hope was both encouraging and affirming, highlighting the importance of consistent support and early intervention in the grieving process."

"A young person who once struggled with thoughts of giving up, now smiles when she speaks about the future. The words she holds onto? “Never give up.” She reminded us why it matters to keep showing up, even in the hardest moments."

This is why we do what we do.

Our young people are the future. They deserve to be seen and listened to 💜

Lighter and less withdrawn

Our team at Apex High School shared:

"A female learner requested that her educator arrange an appointment with CK for the following day. Upon arrival at the CK office, the learner proceeded to the session. Once seated, she became visibly distressed and began to cry.

During the clarification process, the learner disclosed that she has been experiencing difficulties with her mental health, largely stemming from challenges within her home environment. She reported struggling to maintain a balance between her academic responsibilities and increased expectations at home. Although she expressed willingness to contribute to these responsibilities, she indicated that the cumulative pressure has begun to negatively affect her well-being. The learner described feeling a strong expectation to be “perfect” and consistently present, while perceiving that her efforts to meet family expectations are not recognised or deemed sufficient. She further reported that her boundaries are not respected, contributing to a sense of emotional disconnection from her family.

The CF informed the learner that a follow-up check-in would take place the following week. During this session, the learner reported significant improvement, noting that the initial session had provided her with clarity regarding her circumstances, mental health, and the steps she wishes to take moving forward. She shared that two of her educators observed a positive change in her presentation, describing her as appearing “lighter” and less withdrawn.

The learner further indicated that her engagement with CK enabled her to initiate open conversations about mental health within her family, contributing to a reduction in stigma. She expressed appreciation for the support received and emphasised the importance of creating spaces where mental health can be discussed openly, without negative connotations."

We have started equipping teachers to implement emotional regulation routines in their class - and we are seeing encouraging results!

Our team at St Vincent Primary School shared this story with us:

"Our team spoke with one of the educators whose class has reportedly been very difficult to manage. The educator mentioned that the learners’ behaviour has been challenging at the beginning of the school day as well as after first-break.

We suggested that, for two weeks, breathing and relaxation exercises should be done twice a day - first thing in the morning and again after first-break.

After the second or third relaxation session with the class, the educator reported already noticing a difference in the learners’ behaviour. She mentioned that some learners were able to concentrate for longer periods, while others appeared calmer in class. She could see that the relaxation techniques were having a positive impact on the class."
