Building wellness into everyday school life at Apex High School 🌱

"When an educator noticed learners in a Grade 11 class struggling to manage academic pressure, we responded with something simple but powerful: 5 Days of 2-Minute Wellness.

Every day for a week, learners took just two minutes for a breathing, mindfulness, or grounding exercise - followed by a moment to reflect on how they felt.

It's a small habit with a big purpose: giving learners practical tools they can use on their own, whenever they need them, right in the middle of a busy school day.

This is what an environment of care looks like in practice - small, consistent routines woven into daily school life.

The programme continues into September, building emotional regulation and healthy coping one two-minute moment at a time."

This is what an environment of care looks like in practice: not something CK builds for a school, but something the school community builds with us.

It is worth celebrating when it is driven by the learners themselves!

Thank you, Kylemore Secondary School for sharing this story with us:

"One of our favourite moments this month: our Learner Committee took full ownership of a whole-school programme - planning it, running it, and bringing the entire school along with them.

Teachers even joined in, including a memorable teacher-vs-learner netball game that had the whole school laughing and cheering together.

Moments like these remind us what happens when young people are trusted with responsibility: they rise to it, every time."

When learners are given a safe space to talk to a supportive adult who truly listens, they can find hope, resolve trauma, break free from the downward spiral, and begin a journey toward a place of well-being where they can thrive πŸ’š

An environment of care isn't just something we talk about - it's something learners and staff can feel the moment they walk through our door:

"This month, our team stayed visible and present across the school every day.

But we also invested in something quieter - the physical space itself. Soft music, a calm atmosphere, a place designed to feel safe.

Recently, an educator told us that simply stepping into our office instantly calms her, even in the middle of a high-stress, sleep-deprived day."

That's the power of an environment of care: it holds space for everyone in the school community - learners and educators alike 🩡

This is what an environment of care looks like: not a single intervention, but a daily habit that grows with our learners πŸ’›

"This term, our Community Keepers team introduced Ground Yourself - a therapeutic dice game designed to give learners a daily, hands-on way to manage their emotions.

Every day, learners roll a custom dice landing on one of five grounding categories: breathing, movement, sensory awareness, positive self-talk, or a body scan - plus a "choice" option so they can pick what they need most. Whatever it lands on, the whole class does it together.

The learners have responded with great enthusiasm! The chance element keeps it exciting, and choosing their own activity gives learners a genuine sense of ownership over their own wellbeing.

But this isn't just a fun classroom moment - it's building a toolbox. The goal is for these techniques to become second nature, so learners can reach for them independently whenever they feel overwhelmed, anxious, or distracted - in the classroom and beyond.

With assessments coming up later this year, these learners are also building the emotional regulation skills to walk in calm, focused, and ready to show what they know."
