🚨 BREAKING NEWS: NEW K9 UNIT SCORES MAJOR DRUG BUST — BEFORE ITS OFFICIAL LAUNCH!

Stellenbosch’s newly established Law Enforcement K9 Unit is already making its mark - just days after commencing operational duties.

In what is believed to be a first in Stellenbosch’s history, the Municipality’s newly established Tactical Response and K9 Unit has scored a significant operational success -before the unit has even been officially launched.

This morning, 5 September 2026, information was received regarding a vehicle known to be affiliated with gang-related activities and suspected of transporting fi****ms and drugs towards Klapmuts.

Law Enforcement’s Tactical Response Unit (TRU), supported by the newly operational K9 Unit, intercepted the vehicle on the R44 near Klapmuts.
During a search conducted with the driver’s consent, K9 Juno indicated under the dashboard. Members followed up on the indication, resulting in the recovery of Mandrax tablets and Crystal M**h.

The suspect was arrested and the confiscated drugs were handed over to Klapmuts SAPS for further investigation.

And this is only the beginning. The K9 Unit only commenced duties this week, following the formal training of four handlers and their narcotic-detection canines.

Significantly, the vehicle had reportedly been searched on numerous previous occasions without positive results - highlighting the added capability and effectiveness that the new K9 Unit brings to the fight against illegal drugs and criminal activity.

Thank you to our valued partners at Trees South Africa for this beautiful and informative video highlighting the value, beauty and importance of the magnificent oak trees that form such an integral part of Stellenbosch’s unique character.

The video follows the successful completion of our Oak Planting Project, through which 40 new oak trees - including Pin Oaks, Water Oaks and Turkish Oaks - have been planted across the municipal area. This important initiative helps ensure that we continue to protect and grow this valuable part of our town’s natural and cultural heritage for generations to come.

Listen as Kalinka, the tree expert, explains the value of these iconic trees and why, despite not being indigenous to South Africa, they are not considered invasive or problematic in our area.

It’s particularly fitting as we enter Heritage Month, spring and Arbor Week - a time to celebrate our environment, our heritage and the living landmarks that make Stellenbosch special.
