Today, we celebrate a horse who was once labelled a “problem”, but who simply needed someone to see that his life was worth fighting for. 🐴💚

Happy birthday to our beautiful Basjan!

Four years ago, Lizaene received a call about a young horse who had been passed from one owner to another. Basjan was even suggested as food for our pride! But Liz’s heart and inner voice told her that he deserved so much more.

He deserved a second chance.

Basjan had been broken in when he was too young and had suffered from malnutrition, causing damage to his hoof that required three surgeries. His recovery took a great deal of time, care love and patience, but it gave him the opportunity to begin a new chapter.

Today, Basjan is full of life, loves his groundwork and spends his days as part of a gelding herd, surrounded by the peace and care he always needed and fully deserves.

Basjan reminds us to look beyond the labels placed on someone. Being misunderstood doesn’t make a life less worthy of patience, compassion or another chance.

At Panthera Africa, our love for animals extends far beyond big cats. It reaches across species and includes every life that needs someone to see their worth and believe in them.

Happy birthday, special boy. We’re so grateful Liz listened to that inner voice and chose to see the beautiful soul behind the label. 💚

Please join us in celebrating our rescue horse, Basjan, by leaving him a birthday message below! 🎉

Their road home could begin in just over a week! 🏡

After 8 months away, Chaka, Karlos and Ivana are coming back home to Panthera Africa, where they belong.

Their 2,610 km journey is expected to cost R47,000 (US$2,940). R18 (US$1) can symbolically sponsor one kilometre.

Can you help make their journey home possible? We’re so grateful for every donation and share.

“A best friend is like a four-leaf clover: hard to find and lucky to have.” 🍀🐾🤎

If you’re lucky enough to have a friendship like Jasper and Tammy’s, this is your Monday reminder to tell them how much they mean to you.

💛 Today, we’re missing our Pride, and our global Pride, a little extra.

We’re making progress every day, but there are still so many moments when we feel the absence of the animals and volunteers who have filled our sanctuary with life over the past ten years.

We miss our animals. We miss our volunteers. We miss the energy that comes with having our full Pride together.

But with every step forward, we get a little closer to welcoming our animals home, reopening our doors and once again filling the sanctuary with familiar faces, new faces, voices, laughter and special moments. 🐾💛

That’s what we’re working towards. And none of it would be possible without all of you. 🐾🩷

Today, on what would have been his 24th birthday, we remember a very special little dog named Scorgo, the first dog on the farm before Panthera Africa welcomed its pride, and one who made a much bigger difference than he could ever have known. 🐾💛

Scorgo had been with Lizaene since he was only a few weeks old and was always her loyal right-hand man. When she worked at a previous project raising lion cubs, Scorgo was always beside her, helping to teach them manners and important social skills, while also guiding and supporting Lizaene through the many years that followed.

He later came with Lizaene to Panthera Africa, where he went on to play a special part in raising many of the animals here. His wisdom, knowledge and love touched and inspired both his two-legged and four-legged friends.

Panthera Africa does not condone raising lion cubs in captivity for exploitation. Scorgo’s story is one of the many stories we carry with us that led us to advocate against these practices. It’s also why no breeding, trading or hands-on animal interactions are allowed at our sanctuary.

Scorgo reminds us that size has nothing to do with the difference we can make. This little dog became a teacher, a guide and a loyal friend to animals far bigger than he was, simply by sharing the wisdom and love that came so naturally to him.

Happy birthday in heaven, special Scorgo. Your little paws helped shape so many lives and your place in the Panthera Africa story will never be forgotten. 💛

Please leave a 🐾 below as we remember Panthera Africa’s very first farm dog today.

She may be one of the smallest members of our pride, but Tammy has changed another animal’s life in the most beautiful way. 🐾💛

Happy 8th birthday to our beautiful Tammy!

Tammy’s journey began as part of a feral cat colony in Bloemfontein, South Africa where she was sterilised and vaccinated. Fiercely independent yet deeply loving, Tammy decided, in her own time, to embrace human companionship and eventually chose to remain at her new home, entirely on her own terms.

But her story became even more special when she met Jasper.

Jasper is a serval whose start in life was far from easy. He suffered a traumatic brain injury within the first few hours of his life, leaving him in need of special care, comfort and emotional support.

When their paths crossed, something extraordinary happened. Tammy became the steady, reassuring presence Jasper needed and their friendship grew naturally into a quiet and steadfast bond built on mutual trust. From the day they met, they’ve been inseparable.

Today, Tammy and Jasper live together at Panthera Africa, where she spends her days curled up beside him, exploring their peaceful enclosure, communicating with him in their own special way and simply watching the world go by at his side.

Our veterinarian has confirmed that their wellbeing depends on them being together. It’s a beautiful reminder that the care and understanding we need don’t always come from where we expect them to. Sometimes, they arrive in the most unexpected form. Compassion truly knows no species.

Tammy reminds us that family isn’t always defined by where we come from or even by species. Sometimes, it’s simply the one who chooses to stay beside us, no matter what.

Happy birthday, precious Tammy. Thank you for showing us the quiet strength of unconditional love and the beauty of chosen family. 💛

Please help us fill Tammy’s special day with love by leaving her a birthday message below.

⚽🦁 Someone call the football scouts... our girl’s been practising!

Baguira’s back playing ball and we think our queen might just have what it takes for the big leagues. 👑⚽

There’s just one problem... she doesn’t have a football team yet. 😂

Can you help us get Baguira noticed? Share this post and tag your favourite football clubs, players and friends! Let’s see how far our Pride can get her!👀💛

And very importantly, what position are we signing her for? Leave your ideas in the comments! ⚽😂

🌿 New roots for a new chapter.

After the January wildfire, we reached out to local nurseries for help with trees and vegetation to replace some of what was lost.

We were so grateful to have kind and generous people step forward to support us, and INDULI WHOLESALE NURSERY | Premium Trees & Shrubs was one of them.

They arrived with a truck full of trees for Panthera Africa. 💚

For us, these trees represent something hopeful. They’re part of the new growth taking place around our sanctuary and part of the next chapter we’re building after such a difficult year.

As they take root and grow, they’ll become part of the landscape our animals call home and a reminder of the people who helped us when we needed it most.

A huge thank you to the team at Induli Nursery for answering our call, giving so generously and helping us bring greenery back to Panthera Africa and thank you to for the amazing drone footage!🌱💚
