*Lekwa LM hosts Air Quality Awareness Campaign*
Lekwa Local Municipality together with Gert Sibande District Municipality recently hosted an Air Quality Awareness Campaign at Stanwest Hall, bringing together various government departments, to raise awareness about the importance of air quality monitoring in protecting public health and the environment.
The MMC for Community Services and Safety, Cllr. Mapaseka Molaba, welcoming all participants, stated:
“We are grateful to all stakeholders for bringing this important initiative to Lekwa. Air quality awareness is essential for protecting the health of our communities and preserving our environment,’’ said MMC Molaba.
The campaign was brought to Lekwa due to the municipality's location within an area surrounded by industries that contribute to carbon emissions. The municipality is also home to an air quality monitoring station, which assists the South African Weather Service (SAWS) in collecting essential data on Standerton's and surrounding areas air quality.
During the information sharing session, community members were also educated on the importance of safeguarding these facilities and protecting them from vandalism, as they play a critical role in environmental health. Residents were also informed about the day-to-day activities that contribute to air pollution and the best practices to help reduce pollution within their communities.
With the winter season approaching, community members were urged to refrain from burning unwanted waste, as this contributes significantly to air pollution. Instead, residents were encouraged to dispose waste responsibly by making use of the municipality's scheduled waste collection services.
