🪁 THE SKIES ABOVE SEDGEFIELD ARE ABOUT TO COME ALIVE! 🪁

Something special is taking shape behind the scenes in Sedgefield.

The Garden Route Kite Festival is returning to Scarab Village on Sunday, 18 October, and while the colourful kites will be the most visible part of the day, there is a whole lot happening behind the scenes to make this annual community event a success.

From working out the field layout and parking arrangements, to planning kite anchors, shade for the kiters, sandbags and stall positions, the organising team is busy making sure everything is ready. Even the seemingly small details like finding large bags for the sand anchors that can be reused year after year are being carefully considered.

And then there is the entertainment!

Professional kiters from South Africa and abroad will be bringing spectacular kites to our skies. There will be live music, dog shows, pony interaction, face painting, children's activities, food stalls and plenty of opportunities for families to fly their own kites.

But perhaps the most important thing about the Garden Route Kite Festival is what it means for our community.

The festival is proudly sponsored by RE/MAX Coastal in aid of Masithandane, helping raise funds for the important work Masithandane does in our community.

There is also a wonderful local flavour emerging. The organisers are looking at opportunities to showcase local talent, including young people from Sedgefield who have been supported by Masithandane and are now finding their own way in the world.

And when the last kite comes down and the crowds have gone home, the work doesn't immediately stop. The organisers are even planning a community braai afterwards, giving everyone who has worked so hard to make the festival happen a chance to sit down, relax and enjoy the fruits of their labour together.

This is our festival.

It brings visitors into Sedgefield, gives local businesses and vendors an opportunity to benefit, provides a wonderful family day out, and most importantly, helps support a local organisation doing meaningful work in our community.

So, Sedgefield, let's get behind it. ❤️

Its our annual Kite Festival on the 18th October 2026. We have lots of fun activities for the family, but I am looking for local people who can entertain the children for example a clown, animal balloon blowing, hooping, jumping castle hire, tractor rides, demonstrations of fire dancing, reptiles or anything exciting people will enjoy watching. Other than the awesome Kites! I have secured a great face painter. Please let me have your ideas and suggestions.

FOR A CHILD AND YOUTH CARE WORKER

Masithandane a Community NGO based in Sedgefield is looking to recruit a Child and Youth Care Worker or trainees. Candidates require Matric or an NQF level 4 Qualification in working with children.

Scope of work:
• Working with vulnerable and less fortunate children and families in the Community, including home visits and a safe park program in the afternoons.
• Have a love of children and helping people.
• Good time management, organizational skills and accountability
• Language requirements – English and or Afrikaans or isiXhosa.
• Applicants should have strong family and other support systems to allow flexible work including weekends and public holidays when necessary.
• Available to start immediately.

At Masithandane, generosity comes in many forms.

As an NPO, we are incredibly grateful for the many donations we receive from individuals, families and businesses. Clothing, household items, books, toys, furniture and all sorts of useful goods are donated with the hope that they will make a difference in someone else’s life.

But sometimes we receive items that we simply cannot distribute immediately. Until now, many of these donations have had to be stored. And while storing them may seem like the sensible thing to do, we believe there is a better way.

Why let good things sit in storage when they could be useful to someone else?

That’s why Masithandane has opened a Charity Shop.

The shop gives donated items a second chance while helping us turn surplus donations into valuable resources for our community. Someone may find a bargain they need, while their purchase helps support the important work Masithandane does in our community.

It’s a simple idea with a meaningful purpose:

And there’s something special about knowing that when you buy from the Masithandane Charity Shop, your purchase contributes towards an organisation committed to caring for and empowering people in our community.

Sedgefield’s International Kite Festival: Where Tourism Takes Flight and Community Benefits

Sedgefield’s skies are about to come alive – and the whole Garden Route stands to benefit.

Few community events can claim to bring together international tourism, local economic opportunity, spectacular entertainment and meaningful social impact quite like the RE/MAX Garden Route Kite Festival.

Now in its 10th year, Sedgefield’s much-loved kite festival has grown from a community initiative into an event with a growing international profile, attracting visitors, generating significant media exposure and raising funds for a cause that directly changes young lives.

The 2026 festival will welcome eight confirmed international kite flyers and six professional South African kiters, bringing colour, skill and spectacle to Sedgefield’s skies. Their participation strengthens the festival’s position as an emerging international kite tourism destination, giving visitors another compelling reason to include Sedgefield and the Garden Route in their travel plans.

But the festival is about far more than kites. It offers a vibrant family experience with a mass kite fly, craft and food market, children’s entertainment, dog agility displays and school art competitions, creating an event that appeals to residents and visitors alike.

What makes the festival particularly special is that tourism activity translates directly into community benefit. Organised by Masithandane, the festival is the organisation’s primary fundraising platform for its Children’s Bursary Fund, which supports vulnerable learners from Sedgefield who need to travel outside the town to attend high school. In other words, every visitor, exhibitor and sponsor contributes to something bigger.

The kites bring people to Sedgefield. The visitors stimulate the local economy. And the proceeds help give young people a better future. A proven economic and media success
The 2025 festival, held at the Scarab Market, attracted approximately 2 000 visitors and generated an estimated R529 033 in economic activity for Sedgefield and surrounding areas. It also raised R62 000 for the Masithandane Bursary Fund.

The festival's reach extended far beyond Sedgefield. Coverage across SABC News, The Sedgefield Edge, EP Herald, Algoa FM, YouTube and social media generated an estimated 13.5 million media impressions, with an Advertising Value Equivalent of approximately R2.87 million. That represents extraordinary exposure for a community-based event and provides a powerful platform for promoting Sedgefield, the Garden Route and the Western Cape as tourism destinations.

The festival demonstrates what can happen when organisations share a common vision. The partnership between RE/MAX Coastal as Title Sponsor, Wesgro as Joint Venture Partner, and the Garden Route District Municipality as Strategic Support Partner, together with Masithandane and the wider Sedgefield community, has helped turn a local event into a tourism attraction with regional and international potential. It creates opportunities for local SMMEs, accommodation providers, restaurants, traders and tourism businesses while simultaneously supporting community development.

Come and watch Sedgefield take flight. The RE/MAX Garden Route Kite Festival is more than an annual event. It is tourism with purpose.
As Sedgefield celebrates the festival’s 10th anniversary, the message is simple:
