The Club has been operating in the Sandton Virgin Active health club since 1992, and over the years has taught many hundreds of children to swim, and has produced National Age Group and Senior swimming champions, and Provincial and National Age Group and Senior records. Stroke Development classes, Beginner Squads and Age Group training take place at the Sandton Virgin Active club's 25m indoor heated swimming pool, while Learn-to-Swim takes place in the separate leisure pool which is heated to 31 degrees. If you want Learn-to-Swim expertise, or a complete training programme for the Competitive Swimmer, look no further than Haupt Swimming. IN ORDER TO SWIM WITH US, YOU DO NEED TO BE A MEMBER OF VIRGIN ACTIVE SANDTON. LEARN TO SWIM
Our Learn-to-Swim business specialises in introducing and preparing your youngster to learn water skills and then swimming skills. Learn-to-Swim Classes are offered in the warm, enclosed, purpose built leisure pool. A staff of qualified and registered swimming teachers is on hand to make learning swimming safe and fun. Our swimming teachers are friendly professionals who have helped many a young swimmer on the path to mastering the skills needed for swimming. Classes start with kids as young as 12 months old, and the young swimmer is taught skills ranging from water orientation to water safety. Lessons follow a structured curriculum so that your child's progress and competency can be assessed and catered for. We do offer Adult Learn-to-Swim and stroke correction lessons too; you are never too old to learn. STROKE DEVELOPMENT
The Stroke Development programme is the next logical step after learning to swim. Learn-to-Swim develops the basic skills necessary to stay afloat and get yourself out of harms way. Stroke Development takes these basic skills and refines them to develop competent competitive swimming strokes. Starting at age 6 or 7 the young swimmer is moved from the 'small' warm Learn-to-Swim pool to a 25m lap pool. They begin to get used to the length of the pool (the same as a normal school pool) and begin to learn how to train and learn in groups. This is consistent with their social development where they find themselves in school, also learning in groups. Sessions last anything from 30min to a full hour, depending on the age, skill and fitness level of the swimmer. Swimmers are encouraged to develop at their own pace, to make swimming more fun - but the beginnings of competitive swimming are introduced to swimmers at this stage to get them prepared for the summer school swimming season. Stroke Development is extremely important for young swimmers, and between the ages of 6 and 13, keeping up a consistent swimming programme will ensure the youngster has the confidence to participate at school and/or compete for their school, compete for their Club and go on to compete at a provincial and national level too. SQUAD TRAINING
Swimming Squads cater for the competitive swimmer - whether the swimmer is a school, club, provincial or national swimmer. Squads are organised by ability, and are very goal directed. South African swimming is divided into three Age-Group Levels (levels 1-3), the SA Youth Nationals standard and the SA Senior Nationals standard. All beginner swimmers compete in Level 1. Progression to Levels 2 and 3 is dependent on the swimmer achieving a qualifying time standard as set by Swimming South Africa. Children enter the competitive squad training programme around the age of 10. The first Age Group at SA Level 1 Championships is 10 & Under. Competitive squad swimmers train more regularly than school swimmers, and compete once a month at the Provincial Age Group Gala. Squad Training starts at a one hour pool session at least three times per week at beginner Age group Level; and progresses to a six day per week training programme, involving two training sessions per day some days of the week at the Level 3, Youth and Senior Nationals levels. Competitive swimming is simply a fantastic sport and if you want to join a training squad you'll need to bring your commitment to work hard, your talent for swimming and your patience to persevere through the long and at times arduous training regime of the competitive swimmer.
