A wrap on Sentech Africa Tech Week!

From insightful discussions to groundbreaking innovations, Sentech Africa Tech Week once again highlighted the role of technology in shaping Africa’s digital future. We were proud to engage with industry leaders, partners, and innovators who continue to drive meaningful progress across the continent.

Day 2 opened with a powerful and thought-provoking address by Itumeleng Segaloe, setting the tone for critical conversations.

He emphasised the need to:
🔹 Build sovereign and ethical AI that protects and empowers African data
🔹 Maximise and beneficiate our natural resources
🔹 Invest in resilient digital infrastructure, from data centres to satellite communications
🔹 Strengthen partnerships that drive innovation, skills development, and inclusive growth

Our colleagues also contributed across key stages throughout the week:

• Sentech CIO Nomahlubi Ogoh joined a Fireside Chat with Ram Ramakrishnan, exploring the rise of autonomous attacks, including AI-powered breaches, self-learning malware, and the future of defensive automation.
• Sentech Chief Commercial Officer: Broadband Business, Marius Venter, participated in a panel discussion on the role of technology in driving economic participation.

Sentech remains focused on advancing inclusive connectivity and enabling meaningful digital participation across Africa.

As we wrapped up an impactful week at Sentech Africa Tech Week, we reflect on a powerful keynote delivered by Hon. Deputy Minister Mondli Gungubele on “Laying the Digital Foundation: Infrastructure for an Inclusive Economy.”

His message was clear: digital transformation is not a luxury—it is a necessity. From expanding broadband access and strengthening digital public infrastructure to enabling seamless government services, the focus must remain on inclusion, affordability, and meaningful access for all.

He reminded us that true progress is measured not by how advanced technology becomes for a few, but by how many people it brings into opportunity. A connected society is an empowered society—and no one should be left behind.

At Sentech, we remain committed to building the infrastructure that drives inclusive growth, unlocks innovation, and connects every South African to the digital economy.

At Sentech Africa Tech Week, Kopano Thage (Chief Commercial Officer: Media Business at Sentech) joined industry leaders to unpack Next-Generation Broadcasting in a cloud-driven, multi-platform Africa.

Alongside Lungile Binza (SABC), Sabelo Mwali (MultiChoice Group), and Thabiso Thukani (USAASA), the panel explored the shift from traditional linear TV to hybrid, on-demand streaming.

Key takeaway:
While hybrid broadcasting brings flexibility, the biggest challenge is managing unpredictable demand at scale—ensuring networks can handle massive, real-time spikes without compromising user experience.

The conversation also highlighted Africa’s unique opportunity: enabling inclusive access, empowering creators, and building a digital ecosystem that reflects evolving audience behavior.

Fireside Chat Recap | Building Trusted Digital Infrastructure

What does it take to build digital infrastructure that people can truly trust?

In a powerful fireside conversation, Dumisa Ngwenya, Head of Research and Innovation from Sentech, sat down with Naeem Seedat, Group Executive: Digital Strategy & Venturing, Telkom Group, to explore how Africa can turn trust from principle into practice at scale.

As next-generation connectivity expands across the continent, one message stood out: trust is now as critical as speed and coverage.

Key insights from the discussion:

* AI is transforming telecom networks — enabling smarter traffic optimisation and predictive maintenance
* Building resilience requires embedding cybersecurity at the core of infrastructure
* Trusted digital ecosystems depend on transparency, reliability, and collaboration

From intelligent network management to future-ready infrastructure, the conversation reinforced the importance of designing systems that are not only fast — but secure, reliable, and trusted.

Africa’s digital future must be built by Africans, for Africans.

At Africa Tech Week 2026, Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies, Hon Solly Malatsi challenged industry leaders to move beyond adoption and actively shape emerging technologies like AI in ways that reflect Africa’s realities, values, and development priorities.

He emphasised that while technologies such as artificial intelligence are advancing rapidly, their impact is not inevitable — it is defined by the choices we make today.

Key priorities highlighted:

* Ethical, safe, and trust-driven technology adoption
* Risk-based regulation that enables innovation while protecting rights
* Building African datasets, languages, and knowledge systems into technology
* Strengthening digital inclusion and accessibility
* Moving from consumption to co-creation in the global digital economy

The call to action was clear: collaboration across government, industry, and society is essential to ensure technology serves people — not the other way around.

Big ideas at Africa Tech Week 2026!

Tebogo Leshope shared a powerful message:
Digital infrastructure isn’t optional anymore — it’s essential for everyday life.

From connecting communities to enabling economic growth, the need for faster, more affordable, and more inclusive internet has never been greater.

Sentech is stepping up by:
📡 Expanding 5G into underserved areas
🌐 Rolling out more community Wi-Fi hotspots
💻 Strengthening local data centres
📺 Digitising community media

But there’s still work to do — especially around affordability, access to devices, and digital skills.

“Without digital infrastructure, economies cannot thrive and citizens cannot fully participate.”

“Let’s move from ambition to ex*****on — and from ex*****on to real impact.”
