Grass for the 2026 World Cup.
The best grass for soccer and rugby in many climates is called Bermuda Grass which is derived from our Couch grass aka kweek gras (Cynodon dactylon). Couch grass is an indigenous grass that stabilises the soil in many areas next to our paths. The Amphitheatre used to be covered in Couch grass until Kikuyu was introduced and has taken over.
The grass on which the World Cup's 104 matches will be played has a vital but often overlooked role. Two scientists have spent decades getting it right.
