Look at this stunning find! 🌿✨
I spotted this Common Metallic Longhorn Beetle (Promeces longipes) today. Its vibrant, emerald-green metallic shell is just incredible to see in the wild! These beetles are part of the longhorn family (often called "Boktor" in Afrikaans) and are known for their distinctively long antennae.
Nature’s jewelry at its finest! 🐞✨

You may find it interesting that these beetles are often seen visiting flowers and are considered a regular, harmless part of our local woodland ecosystems.

A powerful orca rises from the water with one of the most impressive dorsal fins you will ever see.

This striking image captures the sheer strength and grace of these intelligent marine mammals. The tall straight fin cuts through the surface creating a commanding presence that demands attention. Every detail from the smooth black skin to the way the water moves around the whale highlights why orcas remain some of the most captivating creatures in the ocean.
Moments like this remind us of the wild beauty still thriving beneath the waves.

🐸 Meet the Water Lily Reed Frog: Zululand’s Tiny Glass Wonder!
Check out this little neighbor! This is a Water Lily Reed Frog (Hyperolius pusillus), and while he might be small enough to sit on your thumbnail, he’s a local heavyweight in the biodiversity department.
Here are a few "did you know" facts for your feed:
The "Glass" Frog of SA: See how he looks a bit like jelly? These frogs are famous for their translucent skin. If you look closely at their bellies, you can sometimes see their tiny hearts beating or their bones!
Tiny but Mighty: Adults usually only grow to about 20mm. To put that in perspective, you could fit a whole squad of them on a R5 coin.
A Natural "Bug-Zapper": Having these guys around is a win for us—they love snacking on mosquitoes and midges.
The Midnight "Ticker": Don't let the size fool you; they are loud! Their call sounds like a sharp, high-pitched "tick-tick-tick," almost like a tiny hammer hitting a glass nail.
Zululand Celebrity: They are absolute masters of the local wetlands, perfectly camouflaged to look like a stray drop of water on a lily pad.
Local Name: Umgqagqa weminduzea
Keep an eye out on your windows at night—they love to hang out near the lights for an easy insect buffet! 🦟🚫
