uMhlathuze Municipality The City of uMhlathuze incorporates Richards Bay, Empangeni, Esikhawini, Ngwelezane, Nseleni and Felixton and is the third largest municipality in KZN.

The City of uMhlathuze comprises the economic powerhouse of Richards Bay and Empangeni, and its supporting areas of Esikhawini, Ngwelezane, Nseleni, Felixton, Vulindlela, and rural areas. h coast of Zululand in KwaZulu-Natal. uMhlathuze Municipality is not only financially sound, but also offers investors and visitors first class facilities, services and infrastructure. The City of uMhlathuze is the third largest municipality in KwaZulu-Natal and is located on the north-east coast of the province. It is a strategically placed aspirant metropolitan due its close proximity to Durban. It is home to the country’s largest deep-water port and an industrial development zone and enjoys the associated economic spin-offs. The John Ross Parkway, the major access road to the City from the inland provinces, boasts the country’s longest road bridge and has been designed to meet the growing transport needs of the City in line with development plans of the CBD and harbour.

Power utility Eskom has convened a meeting with the City of uMhlathuze Municipality and the Macekane community to provide an update on the construction of the new 400kV Mbewu GIS Substation Project.

Construction of this major infrastructure project is expected to begin next month. Once complete, the substation will strengthen the electricity grid in northern KwaZulu-Natal, increase power reliability, and cushion residents and businesses from the negative impact of power outages.

Eskom further noted that the project is expected to unlock significant investment opportunities in the area through improved energy security and capacity for future development.

The City of uMhlathuze municipality has Piloted a first of its kind Solar High Masts project at Meerense, in Richards Bay.This high mast only uses solar energy, ensuring that motorists and residents are safe even when there are power outages in the area. Many residents have previously complained about darkness in some parts of the city. COU mayor Cllr Xolani Ngwezi says this intervention will be implemented in other areas. 16 high masts have been installed in a number of areas within the municipality since the start of the current financial year.

PUBLIC NOTICE- WATER UPDATE

Please be advised that repair works on the 600mm AC pipeline are currently underway.

In parallel with the pipeline repairs, efforts to alleviate the waterlogged conditions at Richards Bay Cemetery are actively in progress. The operational teams remain on site monitoring and implementing the necessary remedial measures to improve drainage and restore acceptable conditions.
