Eskom could definitely triple its revenue if it were genuinely strict about illegal connections, non-payment and electricity theft.

But dare cut off Soweto, Alexandra and some of the other huge townships with massive levels of non-payment, and suddenly you(ANC) risk losing votes.

And that is where the uncomfortable truth lies: sometimes there are political benefits in maintaining chaos.

You cannot keep rewarding non-payment, illegal connections and lawlessness, then expect a public institution to become financially sustainable.

At some point, political courage has to come before political convenience.

In black politics, Apartheid—or “the Whites”—always seem to sit at the centre of the blame game. Even corrupt parasites find it convenient to point backwards and blame them for the failures of today.

In religion, Satan, aka “the Devil,” is often presented as the ultimate culprit, while responsibility is placed in the hands of the “Sky-Guy” or his adopted son, Jesus, whose earthly father is traditionally identified as the carpenter Yoseph.

And in South African politics, even Mandela has been turned into a convenient scapegoat—labelled a “sell-out” by some citizens who are struggling with the consequences of the country’s present circumstances.

Perhaps the uncomfortable question is: when does blaming the past become an excuse for refusing to take responsibility for the present?
