Strengthening Community Support Through Partnership

The South African Red Cross Society (SARCS) Uitenhage Branch received a generous donation of 70 blankets and clothing items from Kelston Volkswagen, Community Chest and Sinako NPO, in support of vulnerable community members and the Branch’s Disaster Management Programme. The blankets were distributed to individuals in need, while the clothing will be used to support individuals and families affected by emergencies and disasters, including fires and floods.

SARCS Uitenhage sincerely appreciates the generosity and commitment of these organisations. The engagement also opened opportunities for a long-term partnership, with areas of potential collaboration including humanitarian assistance, disaster response, community support and future joint initiatives. Together, we can strengthen resilience and bring meaningful support to communities in times of need.

Supporting Learners Affected by Flooding

The Eastern Cape Provincial Team, represented by Simphiwe Veto and Nandipha Linda, with the support of volunteer Ashley Swartbooi, distributed school uniforms and shoes to learners impacted by flooding. This initiative aims to provide much-needed support to children whose education and wellbeing have been affected by the disaster.

Targeting 200 school learners, the distribution prioritises those most in need, helping them return to school with dignity, confidence and the essential items they require. Through compassion and community support, we continue to stand with vulnerable families and ensure that children are not left behind in times of crisis.

The South African Red Cross Society (SARCS) Musina Branch conducted humanitarian activities at the Men’s Shelter, providing essential support to vulnerable migrants through hygiene pack distribution and Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) awareness.

Nutrition students supported the activities by taking vital signs and measuring individuals’ weight and height, while promoting important health, hygiene and disease-prevention practices.

SARCS volunteers also provided Restoring Family Links (RFL) services, helping individuals reconnect and communicate with their families and loved ones. Through these efforts, SARCS continues to promote health, dignity and family unity among vulnerable communities.

The President of the South African Red Cross Society, Advocate Mothibedi Panyane, met with the President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Mirjana Spoljaric Egger and the Head of the ICRC Regional Delegation, Jean-Nicholas Paquet-Rouleau at its offices in Pretoria for a high-level bilateral engagement.

The discussions reflected on ongoing humanitarian efforts and the Movement’s historical engagement in South Africa during the apartheid era, including the ICRC’s visits to political prisoners on Robben Island from 1963.

The leaders also considered opportunities to deepen cooperation in international humanitarian law and humanitarian diplomacy; strengthen the auxiliary role and institutional capacity of SARCS; protect humanitarian space and the Red Cross emblem; and prepare collectively for emerging humanitarian challenges.

The engagement reaffirmed a shared commitment to transforming South Africa’s humanitarian history into stronger institutions, greater preparedness and principled humanitarian action for the future.
