Mkhonjana River Bridge Project Nears Completion Ahead of Schedule
Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality, 25 May 2026 – The Mkhonjana River Bridge construction project in Ward 1 is nearing completion and is running well ahead of schedule.
The Mayoral Committee conducted an oversight visit to the site today to assess progress and address any challenges on the ground. The 8-month project, which started in February, is currently 85% complete and approximately 5 months ahead of time. At the current rate, work is expected to be finished by the end of June or early July.
The bridge was prioritized in response to disasters that occurred a few years ago, when damage to the river severely affected accessibility for communities. School children were among the most impacted, facing difficulties crossing to get to school.
Executive Mayor Cllr Madoda Papiyana commended the progress and reaffirmed the Municipality’s commitment to service delivery and sound financial management.
“For the last three financial years, our Municipality has spent 100% of its budget allocation. This is the most improved Municipality in this country, and we, as the political leadership, will continue providing the best support to Municipal administration,” said the Executive Mayor.
Once completed, the bridge will restore safe and reliable access for residents and learners, improving mobility and daily life for Ward 1 communities.
