Tribute to a Legend
There are people who enter your life and, through their love, kindness, and genuine care, leave a lasting imprint on your heart. Lionel and Cheryl were that kind of couple—a shining example of compassion, generosity, and selfless giving. I had the privilege of knowing this remarkable couple for nearly a decade, and their impact on my life, and on the lives of so many others, especially the Ethelbert fsmily is immeasurable.
In 2015, they moved to Durban and immediately became an integral part of the Ethelbert family. Lionel's connection to Ethelbert ran deep; as a child, he once called it home, alongside his siblings. It is therefore no surprise that he and Cheryl became true legends within our community.
From the moment they arrived, Lionel and Cheryl embraced the spirit of giving. Every year, as Christmas approached, they would request a wish list from our 65 children and lovingly select gifts for each one. Their generosity transformed our Christmas celebrations into magical occasions. It was always a joy to witness the children eagerly competing for the opportunity to sit beside them—Lionel and Cheryl were undoubtedly popular stars of the day.
In recent years, health challenges prevented them from shopping in person, but their generosity never diminished. Instead, they allowed our staff to purchase the children's gifts on their behalf, ensuring that every child still felt special and remembered. Lionel's commitment to the children's happiness extended far beyond the festive season. During every school holiday, he generously donated funds to treat the children who remained in the Home as they were unable to visit family or host parents. Through his kindness, vulnerable children were able to enjoy simple pleasures such as movie outings, burgers, and pizza—experiences that every child deserves.
Lionel's dedication to Ethelbert was not limited to his financial support. For several years, he served faithfully on our Board of Management, stepping down only when his health no longer allowed him to continue. His willingness to help, particularly with the maintenance and development of our property, was extraordinary. Whenever we needed advice or assistance, Lionel was only a phone call away, often arriving within minutes. Whether it was the installation of our borehole, the implementation of our solar system, or countless other projects, he always ensured that we received the best possible service and support.
Following Cheryl's passing two years ago, Lionel faced an unimaginable loss. Many of our conversations with him centred on how deeply he missed her companionship and presence. Yet even in his grief, he remained committed to helping others. He continued to encourage his children to support Ethelbert Children's Home, ensuring that the spirit of generosity and compassion would continue through future generations.
Go well, our dearest Lionel. You are a legend in our eyes, and we will miss our conversations more than words can express. You taught us the true meaning of giving without expecting anything in return. Through your example, you showed us all what kindness, humility, and generosity look like in action. Your quiet acts of service touched countless lives and deserve to be remembered and celebrated.
Your legacy of love, compassion, and unwavering support will continue to inspire us for many years to come.
The Ethelbert family extends our deepest condolences to your sons, daughters-in-law, grandchildren, siblings, and all those who feel the profound loss of your passing. Your family has truly lost a legend, and we have lost a dear friend, mentor, and champion of our children.
Rest peacefully, Lionel. You will never be forgotten.
