✨ Meerkat Moment of the Day! ✨

With curious eyes and a watchful gaze, this adorable meerkat reminds us why these small mammals are among the most fascinating animals in the animal kingdom.
Native to the arid regions of southern Africa, meerkats are highly social creatures that live in close-knit family groups called mobs. Working together, they take turns standing guard, caring for their young, and protecting one another from predators.
Next time you visit the National Zoological Garden, stop by and say hello to our meerkats—you might just catch them on sentry duty or soaking up the sunshine! ☀️
📍 Visit the NZG and discover the amazing wildlife that calls our zoo home.

🎉🦒 Happy 1st Birthday, Luna! 🦒🎂

Today we celebrate a very special milestone as Luna turns 1 year old! 🎉

Luna was born on 8 June 2025 to proud parents Momoza and Bonita. From the very beginning, both parents were incredibly protective of their little one, especially during her first few months of life.

At around four months old, Luna began browsing vegetation while still suckling from her mother, an important stage in her growth and development. Watching her grow into a healthy and curious young giraffe has been a wonderful journey for our animal care team.

This milestone is a testament to the dedication of our caregivers, who work tirelessly every day to provide the highest standard of care and ensure the wellbeing of all animals in our care.

Join us in wishing Luna a very happy first birthday and many more years of health and happiness! 💚

🌍🦁 SANBI National Zoological Garden at the 6th Joint TAG Meeting 🦏🌿

From 25–28 May 2026, the 6th Joint TAG Meeting, held in collaboration with the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA), brought together conservation professionals from around the globe at Taipei Zoo.

The event welcomed 117 participants from 23 countries and 75 organisations, creating a valuable platform for collaboration, knowledge sharing and collective action in support of species recovery and population management.

Representing the SANBI National Zoological Garden were Tracy Rehse (Senior Manager: Animal Collections and Conservation) and Mark Howitt (Garden Manager: Mokopane Biodiversity Conservation Centre).

Over four inspiring days, delegates engaged in TAG meetings, workshops, joint sessions and discussions focused on strengthening partnerships across regions, species groups and conservation disciplines. Together, participants explored innovative ways to enhance conservation outcomes and advance shared priorities for wildlife conservation worldwide.

🌱 By working together across borders and institutions, we can build a stronger future for biodiversity and the species entrusted to our care.
