Minister Patricia de Lille: Congratulations to Mexico for a well executed FIFA World Cup 2026 opening ceremony. And of course they sealed it with a victory on the soccer field.

While we compete on the playing field we will cooperate in tourism to stimulate travel between our two nations. I met with Mexico’s Tourism Secretariat and we will explore joint destination marketing initiatives and improved air access.

South Africa will also amplify the promotion of the Electronic Travel Authorisation system. With the ETA, Mexicans can get their visas within 24 hours without having to meet an official.

Minister Patricia de Lille: Sports Tourism has become a true catalyst for tourism growth. has proven that for South Africa as fans follow their favorite golfers. Our strategy is to come earlier and stay longer.

Mexico City too has a LIV Golf tournament. With a population of over 22 million, the city alone could be a source market.

This morning together with our Ambassador in Mexico Beryl Sisulu, we met with the Mexico City’s Tourism Secretary Alejandra Frausto.
