“The true measure of development is not only the roads we build, the infrastructure we maintain or the revenue we generate, it is the direct investment we make into the youth.”

My opening remarks at the Unisa hosted two-day 50th Anniversary of June 16 Summit — "1976–2026: Commemorating 50 Years of Youth Resilience."

Unisa is hosting a two-day 50th Anniversary of June 16 Summit — "1976–2026: Commemorating 50 Years of Youth Resilience."

I had the honour of welcoming delegates on behalf of the City of Tshwane, the as host city.

Esteemed guests included Unisa leadership and students, Abdou Samb, Ambassador and Patron of the Abdou Samb Foundation; former Premiers Mathews Phosa and Supra Mahumapelo; and former Ministers Lindiwe Sisulu and Tokozile Xasa.

As we honour the heroism of the Class of 1976, we must act, not just commemorate. Today's youth need real representation in government, and real empowerment in business and beyond, with ownership and a genuine stake in the economy.

The City is already creating opportunities through supply chain ring-fencing for youth-owned entities. It's a start, and we need to do more.

Today marks 50 years since the June 16, 1976 Student Uprisings, moments that define our nation’s history. We pause to honour the courage of the young people of that generation, and to recognise that the freedoms we enjoy today rest on their sacrifice.

Youth Day calls us to remember and reflect on our history , but also to look ahead and project towards a prosperous future. It reminds us of our shared responsibility to build a City, province and country that gives young people today every opportunity to learn, to grow and to thrive through education, skills development and platforms for meaningful participation.

As we honour the past, let us recommit to a future in which the youth of today can prosper, in a City that works for all its people.

Happy Youth Day.

This afternoon I received a memorandum from the Concerned Tshwane Residents (CTR) civic movement on behalf of residents of Atteridgeville, Saulsville, Lotus Gardens and surrounding areas, raising concerns around illegal migration and illegally operated foreign-owned businesses and tuckshops. The Atteridgeville Police Station Commander was also present and received a copy of the memorandum from the CTR.

The City shares these concerns, not just in Atteridgeville and surrounding areas, but in Tshwane as a whole. Illegal connections to our water and electricity networks place a direct burden on infrastructure that our residents depend on every day. Our by-law enforcement operations are ongoing, and will be intensified to identify, inspect and shut down illegally operated businesses and tuckshops, disconnect illegal water and electricity connections and ensure that those operating outside the law are held accountable through the appropriate legal processes.

We encourage our communities to not take the law into their own hands and allow the City and SAPS to handle this properly and lawfully.

📰GOVERNMENT ENCOURAGES BAFANA BAFANA TO PRESS ON

Government commends Bafana Bafana for their spirited performance in their opening match against Mexico in the FIFA World Cup. While the final score was not what the nation had hoped for, the team represented South Africa with unity, determination, and a sense of pride on the world’s biggest stage.

We encourage the team, coaching staff and support team to remain focussed and confident as the prepare for the remaining matches in the group stage.

Together, we can inspire our team to greater heights; South Africans are urged to rally behind our boys and cheer them on as they carry the hope of the nation.

Wear your green and gold on Bafana Fridays and continue to stand united behind our national team throughout their FIFA World Cup journey.

South Africa remains proud of Bafana Bafana and believes in their ability to bounce back stronger.

ALL OF US. ALL IN. KAOFELA.

PRESS STATEMENT: DA’s Desperate Attempt to Discredit Deputy Executive Mayor Eugene Modise Will Not Distract him from Serving the People of Tshwane

09/06/2026

This morning, I joined Executive Mayor Dr Nasiphi Moya, MMC for Utility Services Frans Boshielo, MMC for Health Tshegofatso Mashabela and MMC of Economic Development and Spatial Planning, Sarah Mabotsa at the official handover of the rehabilitated Kentron Substation in Centurion, a R104 million investment in grid resilience, service reliability and the future of Region 4.

This substation serves thousands of households and businesses across Swartkop, Eco Park, Highveld, Southdowns and Centurion Residential Estate. Fire damage and equipment failure had reduced its capacity to just 40MVA. Today, it stands fully restored to its original 120MVA capacity, improving supply reliability and protecting household infrastructure from switching surges and outages.

As MMC for Finance, I am proud that this project was delivered through disciplined capital investment, backed by the City’s commitment toward repairs and maintenance under the Electricity Stabilisation Plan.
