23 Years of Chasing Light 📸☀️
Twenty-three years ago, my daughter Isabella was born. I fell so completely in love with this tiny little human that I couldn't stop staring at her. I picked up my little Nikon Coolpix and took thousands of photos. She became my muse.
I had no idea that one little camera would build a life.
For 23 years, you've invited me into the moments that matter most.
I've photographed weddings and cried. I've photographed funerals and cried.
I've watched baby bumps grow, then laughed with exhausted new parents during their very first family photos. I've fixed hair and makeup before matric farewells. I've made grumpy dads who announced, "I hate photos," laugh so hard they forgot they were having their photo taken... I've stitched dresses that tore open at the worst possible moment. I've put Band-Aids on blistered feet after impossible high heels. I've prayed with nervous brides before they walked down the aisle. I’ve wiped tears of a newly wed bridegroom’s face. I've comforted anxious mothers who just needed someone to breathe with them. I've watched young men arrive awkward and guarded, then leave wondering how being in front of my camera suddenly felt so easy.
I've walked through rivers, climbed mountains, stood in mud, chased sunsets, and waited for that one perfect sliver of light.
I've spent thousands of hours editing with a sore neck and a back full of spasms because I wanted the final image to feel exactly the way the moment did.
When I started, I'd take 500 photos to deliver 30.
Today, I can take 30 to deliver 30.
Not because I care less—but because 23 years has taught me how to see.
Photography didn't just become my career.
It sustained me while I raised my children on my own.
One of my most treasured possessions is my Canon 85mm f/1.8 lens. It's 18 years old, has never been insured, and my brother gave it to me after my divorce in 2008. That lens has photographed countless families, weddings, babies, businesses and love stories. Every time I pick it up, I'm reminded that some gifts become part of your story.
I've been nominated for Best of Pretoria two years in a row. We’re waiting for the results, but I think I've already won.
Because I get to photograph the best of Pretoria!
YOU ❤️
One of the meanings of my name is “Child of the Light.” Perhaps that's why I've always been captivated by light—the way it slips through trees, wraps around a mother's face, catches a child's laughter, rest on a handsome smile or folds gently on two hands holding each other.
Over the years, I've realised I've been blessed with two gifts. The first is that people relax with me. The second is that I see beauty everywhere.
Maybe that's what these 23 years have really been about—not taking photographs, but helping people see themselves the way I see them.
Beautiful! 😄
Thank you for trusting me with your stories, your milestones, your tears, your laughter, and your love.
Every photo I've ever taken has been more than a picture.
It's been someone's memory.
And it has been one of the greatest privileges of my life to preserve it!
