On the demand side, the system must ensure that the skills needed to drive our country’s economic growth and social development are delivered at an increasing rate, because available, quality skills will enhance both investment and service delivery. Addressing the Portfolio Committee today, Minister Buti Manamela said the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) intervention was a necessary step to protect both students and public resources.

Today, Minister Buti Manamela appeared before Parliament’s Portfolio Committee to reaffirm that every decision taken regarding National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is centred on protecting students and safeguarding their future.

More than 800,000 students rely on NSFAS for tuition, accommodation, food and learning support. The intervention aims to ensure uninterrupted funding, protect student accommodation, clear appeals backlogs, strengthen data protection, and restore stability within the institution.
“NSFAS is not just an administrative entity. It is the difference between opportunity and exclusion for many young people.”

Day 2 of the Department of Higher Education and Training /Commonwealth of Learning National Workshop on AI in Education focused on policy alignment, implementation, and capacity building within the education sector.

Dr Sanele Mthembu opened the day with a recap and reflection on the key discussions from Day 1, highlighting emerging themes on AI and the future of teacher education.

Delegates then participated in two breakaway sessions.
The first session focused on Policy and Systems, where participants were divided into three groups to engage with the following thematic areas:

Policy and Governance – with the objective of drafting recommendations on policy, governance, coordination, and implementation frameworks for AI integration in teacher education.

Ethics and Responsible AI – focusing on recommendations related to ethical principles, governance considerations, and responsible AI implementation within teacher education.

Quality Assurance and Regulation – aimed at drafting MRTEQ policy recommendations to guide quality assurance and regulatory approaches for AI integration.

The second breakaway session focused on Alignment, Implementation, and Capacity Building, exploring strategies to support institutional readiness, educator development, and sustainable AI integration across the education sector.
