Somalia Strengthens Strategic Partnership with South Africa at African Union Executive Council

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia | 29 July 2026

On the sidelines of the African Union’s 49th Executive Council, H.E. Abdisalam Ali, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, held bilateral discussions with South Africa’s H.E. Ronald Lamola, Minister of International Relations and Cooperation.

The two ministers discussed advancing cooperation on AU initiatives, regional peace, economic partnership and development. H.E. Ronald Lamola reiterated South Africa’s commitment to supporting Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and both sides committed to deepening bilateral engagement.

Stroebek, Somalia Desk Officer.

We held productive discussions on strengthening Somalia–South Africa relations.

Adam Isak Ali, Designated Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Somalia to the Republic of South Africa signed the Book of Condolences at the Embassy of the State of Qatar in Pretoria, expressing his heartfelt condolences to His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Royal Family, the Government, and the brotherly people of the State of Qatar on the passing of His Highness the Father Amir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.

PRESS STATEMENT

Mogadishu, 16 June 2026

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Federal Republic of Somalia expresses its profound concern regarding reports of engagement by the Israeli administration with the secessionist administration of the northern west region of Somalia outside the framework of the Federal Government of Somalia.

The Federal Republic of Somalia considers any such engagement a violation of its sovereignty, unity, territorial integrity, and constitutional order. Somalia remains a sovereign and internationally recognized state, and the Federal Government is the sole legitimate authority empowered to represent the country in international relations.

The Ministry underscores that any political, diplomatic, or other engagement with the secessionist administration that bypasses the Federal Government of Somalia is inconsistent with international law and carries no legal or political standing.

Somalia calls upon the United Nations, the African Union, the Arab League, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, IGAD, and all international partners to uphold international law, respect Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and condemn actions that undermine the unity and stability of the Somali state.

The Federal Republic of Somalia reserves its sovereign right to take all lawful and necessary measures, through diplomatic, legal, and other appropriate channels, to protect its sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national unity.

Somalia remains committed to peaceful dialogue, regional stability, and constructive engagement with all partners, but it will not accept any action that violates its sovereignty or threatens the unity of the Somali people.
