Sri Lanka High Commission in Pretoria Celebrated Vesak Day

Sri Lankans residing in Johannesburg, Pretoria, and surrounding cities gathered at the Sri Lanka High Commission in Pretoria on 09 May 2026 to commemorate Vesak Day in a spirit of unity, devotion, and cultural harmony. The event was organized by the High Commission in Pretoria.

The programme commenced with a Buddha Puja and religious observances led by Most Venerable Phra Kitsakol Phaenoi, Abbot of the Johannesburg Meditation Centre and three Theros. The religious activities included Dharma sermons, chanting, meditation, the transfer of merits, and blessings for devotees who were presented at the event.

Following the observances, participants lit Vesak lanterns and oil lamps, symbolizing peace, wisdom, and enlightenment. A Bhakthi Geetha session was also held, enabling devotees to engage in devotional singing and reflection.

The event brought together more than 70 participants, including members of the diplomatic community in Pretoria, and members of the Sri Lankan community representing diverse religious and ethnic backgrounds, including Hindu, Islam and Christian communities.
