The EU is South Africa’s number one trade and investment partner. More than 1,700 European companies registered in South Africa sustain some 1.3 million local jobs. That’s a partnership for mutual benefit.

Together, we want to go even further. Today at the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, The Department of Trade, Industry and Competition South Africa updated European investors on how to navigate local regulations, including the amendments to the Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE) Codes of Good Practice, the Transformation Fund, and preferential procurement.

This is just one concrete example of how we are delivering on our joint ambition to scale up investments under the Clean Trade and Investment Partnership between the European Union and South Africa, the first of its kind in the world!

30 years after its adoption, South Africa’s Constitution remains a powerful symbol of democracy, equality and dignity.

UNESCO releases 'Behind the Screens in South Africa Challenges Opportunities and Needs of Digital Content Creators'

South Africa’s digital content creators are shaping conversations, sharing knowledge and reaching audiences every day. But behind the likes, views and viral content lies another reality.

🔹 75% have experienced or witnessed Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence (TFGBV).
🔹 72% have experienced or witnessed hate speech online.
🔹 Only 10.4% have received Media and Information Literacy training.
🔹 Yet 87% want training on ethics and freedom of expression.

UNESCO’s new report, Behind the Screens in South Africa: Challenges, Opportunities and Needs of Digital Content Creators, reveals the opportunities, pressures and risks facing those who are increasingly helping to shape South Africa’s information ecosystem.

The message is clear: as the influence of digital content creators grows, so must the support available to help them create safely, ethically and responsibly.

The report calls for greater investment in Media and Information Literacy, ethical AI practices, protection from online harms, peer learning and stronger engagement of creators in shaping the digital spaces in which they work.

Today in Cape Town: Celebrating the 30th anniversary of South Africa’s constitution with the City of Cape Town, Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis and the Centre for Constitutional Values.
