🇿🇦 Reflecting on 30 years of South Africa’s Constitution – a conversation worth continuing.

Ahead of the Embassy’s upcoming event on 6 October, Ambassador Pekka Metso hosted an evening of conversation with civil society organizations and governance experts.

Representatives from Issafrica, Public Affairs Research Institute (PARI), Democracy Works, Afrobarometer and Phaphama Initiatives NPC together with governance experts Mr. Patrick Kulati and Ms. Chrissy Dube, shared their perspectives on South Africa’s constitutional democracy: what has been achieved, the challenges that remain and what lies ahead.

It was an evening of open, lively and thoughtful discussion, with many different perspectives around the table.

Greetings! I'm Minea Simi, the new Team Finland Knowledge intern at the Finnish embassy in Pretoria. My background is in Global Development Studies at the University of Helsinki, and I am currently finishing my master’s thesis on early warning systems in rural Tanzania. My interests span everything from development issues and humanitarian logistics to foreign policy and maritime security.

Here at the embassy, I am looking forward to gaining a deeper understanding of how science and higher education can serve as spaces for exchange, collaboration and diplomacy. During my time at the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, I caught a glimpse of the academic talent and intellectual drive on the continent, so I couldn’t be more excited to contribute to advancing science cooperation between Finland and Southern Africa. I am particularly keen to immerse myself in the intersections of research, policy and diplomacy while experiencing life in one of Africa’s regional centers.

Outside of work, you’ll find me jogging or with a book in hand. I am currently reading fiction from South Africa and am always happy to hear what I should pick up next.

Finland and South Africa launched their joint mentoring programme for young mediators in Pretoria in 2025. Fifteen young people from across the world are participating in the one-year programme to deepen their expertise in mediation. This week, they are meeting in Helsinki for the fourth, and final, in-person phase of the programme. 🇫🇮🌍🇿🇦

📢 Ulkoministeriö hakee johtavaa erityisasiantuntijaa Pretorian-suurlähetystöön määräaikaiseen virkaan 1.12.2026 alkaen tai sopimuksen mukaan.

Johtava erityisasiantuntija vastaa Team Finland -verkoston vienninedistämistoiminnan koordinoinnista ja kehittämisestä Afrikassa. Tehtävässä korostuvat Team Finland -maajohtajien eli edustuston päälliköiden strateginen tukeminen vienninedistämistyössä, suurlähetystöjen vienninedistämistiimien toiminnan ohjaaminen yhteistyössä suurlähettiläiden kanssa sekä osallistuminen toimialatyöhön.

The Team Finland network is organising a business delegation visit to South Africa on 23-26 November, led by Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Ville Tavio.

The visit offers Finnish companies an excellent opportunity to explore new business prospects, strengthen partnerships and engage directly with key decision-makers and industry stakeholders in one of Africa’s most advanced and dynamic economies.

Two years of research by Team Finland South Africa's latest study on Africa's data centre sector and the conclusion is clear: Finnish companies have a real window of opportunity but it won't stay open long.

Here's a fact many haven't caught yet: equipment made in Vantaa is already running inside Africa's largest data centre complex.
The bigger picture: Africa's data centre capacity is set to triple by 2030, with four major projects already in planning across Morocco, Egypt, and South Africa.
Technical specifications are being finalized now.
This is a critical moment for Finnish firms in electrical engineering, cooling, network infrastructure, building systems, and design consultancy.

Finland's school cellphone ban is already showing positive results. Teachers report calmer classrooms, better concentration and more lively break times, with students playing sports and spending time together instead of scrolling on their phones. 📚⚽

Finland's Education Minister Anders Adlercreutz says the goal is not to reject technology, but to help children develop the ability to focus, think deeply and learn effectively.
