Shifting smallholder farmers towards formal markets
When the Agricultural Research Council (ARC) expanded the implementation of Kaonafatso ya Dikgomo (KyD) to all provinces in 2012, it marked an important step forward for smallholder livestock farmers.
In KwaZulu-Natal, the KyD team worked with ARC researchers to provide farmers with training and practical guidance. One of the key challenges was changing perceptions of formal markets, particularly livestock auctions, which many farmers associated with low prices.
Through information, training and continued support, farmers became more confident in engaging with formal markets. KyD subsequently helped introduce livestock auctions in nine villages, creating new opportunities for farmers to sell their animals through established market channels.
In Emamfene, Jozini, farmers even used their own local resources to build an animal holding facility for the village’s first livestock auction. This showed what can be achieved when farmers have the knowledge, confidence and support to take greater control of their agricultural activities.
The impact of KyD extends beyond access to markets. By strengthening farmers’ knowledge, skills and confidence, the programme has helped create opportunities for improved livelihoods and a better quality of life, contributing to a stronger and more sustainable smallholder livestock sector in South Africa.
