DEPUTY MINISTER NEL TO ADDRESS THE YOUTH AND THE CONSTITUTION DIALOGUE IN OBSERVANCE OF THE 50th ANNIVERSARY OF THE 1976 STUDENT UPRISING AND 30TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ADOPTION OF THE CONSTITUTION
The Deputy Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Mr Andries Nel, will on Friday, 19 June 2026, address the Youth and the Constitution Dialogue in observance of the 50th Anniversary of the student uprising and the 30th Anniversary of adoption of the Constitution in 1996.
The date of 16 June was declared National Youth Day in South Africa in honour of the students who protested against the use of Afrikaans as compulsory medium of instruction in schools.
The objective of the Dialogue is to reflect on the sacrifices made by the Youth of 1976 in the liberation of our country and their contribution to the attainment of constitutional democracy. The Dialogue also seeks create a common understanding and vision of a united South Africa where all young people have equal rights and access to socio-economic opportunities.
It forms part of the Department’s Youth Month Commemoration activities and brings together the Youth of 1976 and the youth born post-democracy for intergenerational sharing of experiences.
The event will be attended by important stakeholders such as the Youth of 1976, the Centre for Social Justice (Stellenbosch University), the Independent Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC), the South African Human Rights Commission and the National Youth Development Agency.
