Youth Day Commemoration 2026

On 16 June 2026, the National House of Traditional and Khoi-San Leaders, represented by the Chairperson, Kgosi Thabo Seatlholo, joined South Africans in commemorating the 50th anniversary of the 1976 Soweto Uprising.

The Chairperson participated in wreath-laying ceremonies honouring the youth of 1976, paid tribute to liberation struggle heroes at the Hector Pieterson Memorial, and joined the symbolic torch-lighting ceremony for the 1976@50: Finishing the March initiative alongside student uprising leader Seth Mazibuko.

Through engagements with the media and young people, Kgosi Seatlholo reaffirmed the National House’s commitment to preserving the legacy of June 16, promoting social cohesion, and advancing the unfinished struggle for social and economic justice. The day concluded with his participation in the closing of the Anti-Drug and Alcohol Young Ambassadors Training Programme, where he encouraged young leaders to be champions of positive change in their communities.

🗓️Happening Today |📍,16 June Memorial Acre, Soweto

Today, the Chairperson of the National House of Traditional and Khoi-San Leaders (NHTKL) joined the Seth Mazibuko Foundation and a coalition of partners at the June 16 Memorial in Jabavu, Soweto, for the press briefing ahead of the historic 1976@50: Finishing the March commemorative event to be held on 16 June 2026.

The gathering brought together heritage institutions, civil society organisations, community leaders, youth formations and social justice activists committed to ensuring that the legacy of the youth of 1976 inspires action to address contemporary challenges facing South Africa's communities.
The National House participated as a representative of communities across the country, highlighting the importance of unity in addressing the common challenges linking rural and township communities, including youth unemployment, poverty, substance abuse and social exclusion.

The House also reaffirmed its partnership with the Seth Mazibuko Foundation on the Locating Hector's Missing Shoe initiative.
Partners emphasised that the commemoration must go beyond remembrance and contribute towards finding practical solutions for communities, particularly young people. Among the issues highlighted was the growing impact of alcohol abuse on families, schools and communities.

Participants reflected on the determination of the 1976 generation to protect schools and communities from destructive influences and called for renewed efforts to safeguard today's youth.
The gathering was deeply moved by messages from the families of June 16 heroes, including Hastings Ndlovu and Mbuyisa Makhubu, which highlighted concerns about the limited recognition and support afforded to some families who paid the highest price during the June 16 uprising.
The programme for 16 June will begin with visits to the graves of Tsietsi Mashinini, Kgotso Seatlholo and Hastings Ndlovu, followed by a visit to the Hector Pieterson Memorial. The march will commence at Confrontation Corner at 10h00, retracing the route that students intended to follow in 1976 before it was violently interrupted by police action.
A significant moment of the programme will be the symbolic handover of a torch by participants of the 1976 generation to young people, representing the transfer of responsibility for advancing the values of freedom, active citizenship and nation-building. The march will conclude with the handing over of a memorandum to the Presidency at Orlando Stadium.
As South Africa marks fifty years since the Soweto Uprising, the National House calls on traditional leaders, government, civil society, the private sector and communities to work together to complete the unfinished march towards social justice, ethical leadership, economic opportunity and a better future for all.

Leaders from national, provincial and local government have gathered in Limpopo for a high-level engagement with Traditional Leaders focusing on strengthening collaboration and addressing key challenges facing traditional communities.

Deputy Minister Rev. Prince Burns-Ncamashe reaffirmed the central role of traditional leadership as an integral partner in governance, development, and social cohesion. He emphasised the need for stronger collaboration with government to unlock rural economic opportunities, advance equitable land use, empower young people, and improve service delivery.

Deputy Chairperson of the National House of Traditional and Khoi-San Leaders, Nkosi Mavuso, appreciated the platform of engagement but expressed concern over the limited effectiveness of the Inter-Ministerial Task Team (IMTT). He called for improved coordination, accountability, and responsiveness to ensure that longstanding community issues are addressed meaningfully.

Deputy President Paul Mashatile reiterated government’s commitment to strengthening institutional support for traditional leadership through legislative reforms and improved resource allocation. He acknowledged ongoing challenges, including leadership disputes, capacity constraints, and delays in implementing national frameworks, and called for mediation, dialogue, and partnership-based solutions.

The Deputy President also emphasised key priorities such as rural development, youth empowerment, equitable land use, and the safeguarding of cultural practices—particularly the need to ensure safe and regulated initiation processes. He further encouraged traditional leaders to mobilise communities, especially young people, to participate in the upcoming 2026 Local Government Elections.

Premier Phophi Ramathuba welcomed the Deputy President and underscored Limpopo’s rich cultural heritage and leadership in strengthening the institution of traditional leadership. She highlighted ongoing collaboration with traditional leaders to promote safe customary practices, improve service delivery, and drive inclusive economic development in rural communities.

The engagement reinforces the importance of unity, dialogue, and collective action in resolving disputes, strengthening governance, and advancing sustainable development for the benefit of all communities.
